Its mechanism assists you in lifting your body and helps you build the strength needed to perform a pull-up without assistance. However, 90% of people don’t know how to use the machine properly. Don’t worry—follow these simple steps to set it up correctly: 1. Set the weight according to your strength: The more weight you set, the easier the pull-up will be. Conversely, setting less weight will make it more challenging. For example, if you weigh 70 kg and set the assistance to 30 kg, the machine will help lift 30 kg of your body weight, leaving you to lift 40 kg on your own. 2. Stand onto the foot pads on the machine. 3. Retract your scapula: Pull your shoulder blades back and down to engage your back muscles. 4. Grip the handles just outside shoulder-width, as shown in the video. 5. Place your knees on the assistance pad and let your body hang down until your arms are fully extended. 6. The reason I believe it’s underrated is most people jump up and try to do regular pull-ups, but end up doing them poorly. Thinking they’re too good for these assisted pull-ups. For anyone trying to build pull-up strength, this is the machine for you. Here are some simple cues: ✅ Pick a level that challenges you, but still lets you complete reps with good form. The heavier the weight, the easier the pull-up (machine counterbalances you). ✅ Grip Slightly Wider Than Shoulder-Width ✅ Engage your lats first ✅ Before pulling up, depress your shoulders (pull shoulder blades down and back). ✅ Pull your chest to the bar ✅ Control yourself on the way down SAVE and follow for more quick tips. 🔥 I also just made an in depth Youtube video on this exercise. Let’s chat assisted pull-up machine⬇️ . . . This is a great machine for hypertrophy (let’s build that back 🦋) but especially great for anyone who has a goal of doing bodyweight pull-ups. The assisted-machine is a great starting point for this goal as it provides you with more stability compared to the band, so you can comfortably practice the movement pattern until you get strong/confident enough to move into the banded variation. . . . A few tips/guidelines: ➡️ the assisted machine uses the weight to help you do your reps. Heavier weight selected = easier. Lighter weight selected = harder. ➡️ the wider the grip, the more challenging it will be. I suggest starting with the narrower neutral grip handles if you’re new to pull-ups ➡️ tuck your pelvis into a slight posterior tilt to help co-contract your glutes & core. The core should be turned ON during a pull-up ➡️ mind-muscle connection tip 🧠💡: instead of thinking about about pulling yourself up, think about driving your elbows into ground and “pulling the machine away from you”. This will increase neutral drive and cue a more powerful pull-up . . . The assisted pull up machine is a great step up alternative!!!🙂🫠 I know there’s people who think otherwise but you guys, when I tell you the glute connection you feel on this machine doing this movement is 🤌🏻 I usually don’t do them on this but that day it was empty and nobody was using the pull up machine so I figured why not 🤷🏻‍♀️ You’re able to be much more balanced rather than doing a regular step up which I guess kinda takes away from working your core while doing these but hey if the mission is the glute gains then pls be my guest and try this 🤣 ! With that said, a lot of people use wat too much assistance and work in a way too high rep range. treat getting to a pullup similar to getting to a 225lb bench press — you wouldn’t stick to using super light weight to get there would you? No, you must take a powerlifting style approach and work in a lower rep range (3-5 reps) to be exposed to heavier weight / more resistance. This is because it allows you to precisely simulate the pullup motion while making it manageable to achieve multiple repetitions. If even a band assisted rep seems daunting, start with a very thick band, which will provide plenty of assistance. And if one band does not provide enough, use two. As a backstop, use the assisted pull-ups machine at the gym, or practice lat pull downs. Start with a band that allows you to get 5 sets of 5 pullups resting a minute in between sets. Gradually progress to thinner bands until you can ditch the band altogether and complete an unassisted pull-up.
