Corgis are adorable, funny, and loyal companions, but they’re also herding dogs with unique needs. Here are three mistakes we as first-time corgi owners made and tips to avoid them:
1. Underestimating their exercise needs:
We thought walks around the block were enough. Corgis were bred to herd cattle all day, so they have tons of stamina. Under-exercising leads to pent-up energy and unwanted behaviors!
The FIX: Provide at least 30-60 minutes of VIGOROUS exercise per day, like running, hiking, or playing fetch. Consider enrolling in agility classes or dog sports to channel their energy and instincts.
2. Skipping on training:
We thought their stubby legs and cute faces excuse them from training 😅 Corgis are intelligent but independent, so early and consistent training is crucial. Without it, they can become stubborn and difficult to manage. Since we took him in a year old, it took extra work to reverse his bad behaviors 😰
The FIX: Start with basic commands like sit, stay, and come as soon as you bring them home. Use positive reinforcement with treats and praise. Be patient and consistent, and don’t hesitate to enroll in puppy training classes for guidance.
3. Overlooking their herding instincts:
All these behaviors like nipping, herding behaviors like circling people or cars, and excessive barking were new to us. Our previous dogs never did this. These are natural instincts for corgis, and when unchecked, can become problematic.
The FIX: Provide outlets for their herding instincts with herding toys, and puzzle feeders. Socialize your corgi early and often to introduce them to different people, animals, and environments to curb their herding impulses towards strangers.
