Here’s what’s actually going on when you cut carbs too low in a deficit… Low carbs = low performance = muscle loss Dropping carbs too low literally triggers your brain to release less motor output, resulting in more fatigue. You’re not just tired. You’re neurologically limited. So why are carbs so important during a cut? 1. SNS Drive (Sympathetic Nervous System) Carbs signal your nervous system to unlock more power. They help you lift heavy and maintain intensity. Without them, your performance tanks. 2. The Protein-Sparing Effect In a deficit, your body gets desperate. Without carbs, it breaks down muscle tissue to create glucose. Carbs protect your protein so it can do its actual job: keeping you lean and strong. 3. Intensity Maintenance Carbs lower your RPE (rate of perceived exertion), making heavy sets feel manageable. That intensity is the only signal telling your body to hold onto muscle during a cut. 4. Cortisol Control Cutting carbs too low puts your body into a heightened stress state. High cortisol is catabolic - it breaks down muscle.
