Imagine your house is on fire. You run outside to tell someone. You’re panicked. Frantic. You need help. But everyone just tells you to “calm down”. They reufuse to listen to what you are actually saying. They are kind, gentle. They just want you to stop panicking. But you are screaming, because something is very wrong! Imagine how much more panicked and frantic you would feel if no one was meeting your urgency. If everyone was just calm. Your feelings and behaviour would escalate. That’s what happens for our children when we focus on calming them down. When we act calm and try to impose it on them. Because although there is no real “house on fire” emergency happening, when a child is having a meltdown their nervous system is in a state of perceived emergency. The child is in that heightened state of panic as if an emergency was actually occurring. When their nervous system is in this state, we need to first meet them where they are at. Not by losing our cool, but by using specific techniques to tell their nervous system that their message has been heard. They have been understood. And only then can they return to calm. This is what I teach parents of complex needs kids in Beyond Typical Parenting. Follow me here @beyond.typical.parenting for more. I’m hosting a FREE community zoom call for Beyond Typical Parenting on Tuesday 11th November for the US 5pm PST / 8pm EST Wednesday 12th November for Australia 9am AWST / 11am AEST / 12noon AEDT I’ll share: 📍What’s helped me and my child 📍Strategies for self-regulation that you can implement immediately 📍Parenting techniques that actually work for ND kids. #complexneeds #parentcarer #autismparents #autism #disabilityparenting #specialneedsparenting #pda #autismmum #senparenting #autismmom #meltdown #coregulation

Life with Caleb has been an extraordinary adventure, filled with moments that have reshaped our understanding of joy and deepened our connection to God's love. He opens our eyes to the simple yet profound joys of life. His infectious laughter teaches us that happiness isn’t about seeking perfection but embracing each moment with open hearts. His curiosity and love for life remind me to cherish the small wonders, to see the world through a lens of gratitude. Through him, I’ve learned that joy is more than an emotion, it’s the sweetest response to the world around us, nurtured by love, patience, and grace. Caleb is so much more than his diagnosis, he’s a light, illuminating my life with so much fun and love I didn’t know existed. He demonstrates God's magnificent design, showing us that His plans are not just good, but filled with extraordinary surprises. He’s not just my sweet boy, he’s a guide, drawing me closer to the heart of God. In our journey, joy has revealed itself in powerful ways. I’ve found it in the quiet moments, the inchstones, and the everyday miracles that once went unnoticed. My experience as his mom has transformed my heart, redefined my faith, and shown me that life's greatest blessings often arrive in unexpected forms. 💙💛 - #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsmom #downsyndromelove #faithjourney #DisabilityJourney #risenmotherhood #motherhoodunplugged #downsyndrome #faithinspired #reelsinstagram #disabilityawareness #disabilityparenting Special Needs, Disability Parenting, Down Syndrome, Christian Motherhood

And never have I ever loved so hard ❤️ My oldest son is autistic, non speaking and has high support needs. He was my first baby. He was my first experience with being a mama. And I definitely imagined my motherhood journey would be much different. But this journey is still beautiful. Even with safe foods packed, locks on every door, and never being able to sit down at a playground — it’s our life and in between some of the harder moments, it’s full of so much joy. And if you are a family on a similar journey, just know you are not alone 🫶🏼 #autismmom #autismparentsupport #autismmoms #autismcommunity #autismmama

Being a medical parent comes with a kind of exhaustion that many people don’t fully understand. We give every ounce of ourselves...every👏single👏day. No days off…years on end, God willing. The mental load of constant medical decisions, appointments and advocacy. The physical exhaustion of sleep deprivation, lifting, assisting and always being “on”. The emotional fatigue of holding space for your child’s needs, managing your own feelings and navigating the isolation that can come with this journey. This life is hard. Period. Praying God will supernaturally multiply what bit of sleep I do get these next couple days/nights where we don’t have night nursing coverage🙏 Estimated hours of “sleep”: 12 hours or less in 4 days (96 possible hours)🤦‍♀️…prob more like 9 or 10 since I’m pulling an all nighter tonight. Don’t ask me how I do it sister, just pray for me 🙏🧡 . . . #medicalmama #rettsyndrome #medicallycomplexparenting #specialneedsparenting #disabilityparenting

Constantly learning on this journey of disability parenting, and so much of that learning comes from my daughter. She continues to teach me about resilience, strength, and determination. If only I could go back to the early diagnosis days and tell myself not to worry so much, that together, you learn and adapt and find exactly where you’re meant to be. . . . . . . . . . #motherhood #honestmotherhood #mymotherhood #cerebralpalsy #specialneedsmom #specialneedsmum #honestparenthood #autism #parenthoodunplugged #disability #disabilityawareness #additionalneeds #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsparenting

It has been so difficult not to try to protect and shelter Khara from everything. Sending your child out into the world when they can’t see can feel overwhelming. The fear of how others will treat her, the unknowns, and the emotions that come with raising a child with a disability are real. But through it all, I’ve realized that by supporting her independence and encouraging her to find her own voice, I’m helping Khara love herself and embrace the incredible person she is. She’s discovering how truly capable she is, and that is powerful. Receiving a diagnosis—whether it’s blindness or any other disability—can trigger so many emotions. The fear of the unknown. The challenge of processing what this diagnosis means for your child’s life. It’s tough when those medical professionals deliver a diagnosis without considering the emotional toll. But I’ve learned that a diagnosis, no matter how difficult, is not the end—it’s just a different journey. #BlindnessAwareness #DisabilityAwareness #disabilityacceptance #septoopticdysplasia #blindkidscan #disabilityparenting #specialneedsmom #disabilityadvocate Video description: a young girl in a pink outfit is walking with her white cane along a door. The text says, “There will be a lot of things she can’t do because she is blind.” In the next frame are clips of the girl walking through her school with her white cane, cooking independently, playing the piano and violin, Brailling on her braille typewriter, reading a braille book, singing on a national stage, being crowned national Miss Amazing, bowing after a performance with the cast, being interviewed on a news segment, and running in a track meet with a guide runner. The text says, “Khara: Just watch me!”

Disability parenting is holding grief in one hand and joy in the other. Yes, I have moments where I’m sad thinking about where Charlie should be milestone-wise. But then a second later, I’m absolutely beaming with pride. I don’t want Charlie to grow up feeling sorry for himself, so I’m not going to feel sorry for us either. #disabilityparenting #smatype1 #raredisease

Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. Having nursing in the home or even extra family around to help care for a loved one is ALOT. It’s another complicated aspect of disability parenting/parenting a child with significant medical needs. It can be amazing when you find the right person but also extremely stressful when things don’t work out. As things continue to get complicated, I feel like we are heading in this direction. We’ve been there before, and our nurse was incredible, but I don’t want to go back 😭. I had coffee with a friend the other day and she gave me a gentle reminder that if you want to survive, you will need help. 🫶🏼 #disabilityparenting #caregiver #medicalmom #survivalmode #barelysurviving #nursing #homehealthnurse #momtok
