Raising baby chicks doesn’t have to be hard or expensive! 🐣
I've found a brooder setup that I'm very excited to try out and share my experiences with, and it’s so simple, using a puppy play pen from Kmart. I really love Kmart lol.
Here’s why I think it will works so well.
First of all its going to be easy to clean.
The open design makes it super easy to wipe down and change bedding. No more tricky corners or heavy lifting.
It's super light and easy to move around.
Need to move it outside for sunshine or closer to the heat lamp? No problem! This playpen folds up and is super light, so you can carry it and move it anywhere.
The XL size is big enough for plenty of chicks to run, jump, and flap their wings and even do ZOOMIES!! It keeps them happy and healthy as they grow.
The sturdy sides keep your chicks safe and secure while letting air in. You can even watch them play without opening it up.
Its very customisable, you can add everything the babies need! A heat lamp, food and water, and even little perches for them to practice roosting.
Now that I think about it, I'll need to make another trip down to Kmart to have a scout around for some perches!
By putting puppy pee pads down it will not only help to soak up all the mess and make cleanup even faster, it will help give the little babes a non slip surface to help with their footing.
This setup is so easy, and your chicks will love it!

DIBuilding a chick brooder doesn’t have to be expensive! 🐣💡
I made this DIY brooder using a 27-gallon storage container, hardware cloth, and zip ties—super budget-friendly and easy to put together! It’s a great alternative to store-bought brooders and provides plenty of space for growing chicks.
✅ Why I love this setup:
✔️ Affordable—costs way less than pre-made brooders
✔️ Secure—keeps chicks safe while allowing airflow
✔️ Simple to clean and modify as chicks grow
🐥 How much space do chicks need? (There’s no one right answer here, so let me know how much space you give your chicks!)
➡️ 0-4 weeks: At least ½ sq. ft. per chick
➡️ 4-8 weeks: At least 1 sq. ft. per chick
➡️ 8+ weeks: At least 2-3 sq. ft. per chick before moving to the coop
🐥 Tip: Make sure to cover the top! Chicks start testing their wings sooner than you think.

PEDuckling Brooder 🦆
If you are planning on bringing home ducklings this season (or at any point!) save this video! Although similar to chicks, ducklings do have a few different requirements. Here’s a check list of what you’ll need before you ducklings arrive:
✅ Plastic Bin or somewhere safe to keep them. I use a 55 gallon plastic bin for extra space.
✅ Bedding- something soft like pine chips or hemp bedding. Do not get cedar shavings- it’s toxic to birds.
✅ Heat source- a lamp with a thermometer or a heat plate.
✅ Starter feed- I use @scratchandpeckfeeds Naturally Free Organic Starter. It’s a special blend of cracked organic grains, organic flax meal, wild-caught fish meal, and necessary vitamins and minerals. It has niacin (vitamin B3) which is a nutrient ducklings need for growth. Never use medicated feed- it is toxic to ducklings.
✅ Paint Tray- this is not a requirement BUT it will make your life easier, trust me! Ducklings are super super messy because they use water to clean out their bills while eating and foraging.
✅ Water Dispenser- Ducks drink plenty of water, and it should always be provided near the feed to flush their food down. Also, give them a deep enough bowl of water where they can submerge their head into. This helps to clean their bills and keep the mucous membranes moist. Call ducks (miniature ducks breed) have much smaller heads so they do not require a very deep bowl. The bigger the duckling the bigger the bowl you will need.

SHI didn’t expect them to outgrow their brooder this fast.
They’re still tiny… but somehow already louder, messier, and needing more space than day one.
Real life doesn’t happen in perfect steps.
You can’t plan everything.
Sometimes you just have to jump in and learn as you go.
Also — putting the waterer on a brick was a tip from one of you, and it’s already helping keep things way cleaner. 🤍

LO✨Baby Chick Essentials Checklist✨
✅ Brooder – A safe, contained space for chicks to live in for the first few weeks.
• We use a stock tank (sturdy, easy to clean, keeps them contained).
• Other options: plastic tote, cardboard box, pop-up brooder
• I wouldn’t use a cardboard box with a heat lamp (fire hazard). Use heat plate instead.
✅ Heat Source – Chicks can’t regulate body temperature and need consistent warmth.
• ChickCozy Smart Heater – Safe, energy-efficient, mimics a mother hen.
• Heat lamp – Must be SECURE
• Start at 95°F, lower 5 degrees per week until they’re fully feathered.
✅ Bedding – Keeps the brooder clean, absorbs moisture, and controls odor.
• Eaton Pet & Pasture Hemp Bedding – Low dust, super absorbent, composts fast.
• Pine shavings – Work well but need frequent cleaning.
• Avoid: Cedar (toxic) and newspaper (too slippery).
✅ Chick Starter Feed – High-protein, nutritionally balanced food for growth.
• Essential for strong bones, healthy feathers, and overall development.
• Should be non-medicated unless your chicks are vaccinated for coccidiosis.
✅ Feeder & Waterer – Prevents contamination and waste.
• Chick-sized feeder – Reduces spillage and keeps feed clean.
• Chick-sized waterer – Prevents drowning and keeps bedding out of water.
• Do not use a bowl – Chicks will walk in it, spill it, and poop in it immediately.
✅ Electrolytes & Probiotics – Supports digestion and helps chicks adjust.
• Added to water for the first few days to boost hydration and gut health.
✅ Brooder Cover – Prevents chicks from escaping once they start jumping.
• Hardware cloth, fitted wire lid, or breathable mesh – Keeps chicks in and dust/pets out.

This little setup is made with a Walmart plastic tote, a Sweeter Heater, a piece of scrap wood, plus a simple waterer and feeder and that’s really all your babies need to start off strong.
