Radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes—the visible light that comes from a lamp in your house and the radio waves that come from a radio station are two types of electromagnetic radiation. All electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light in a vacuum (c \approx 3 \times 10^8 \text{ m/s}). They are characterized by their wavelength (\lambda) and frequency (f), which are inversely related by the equation Key Characteristics • No Medium Required: Unlike sound waves, which need air or water to travel, EM waves can travel through the vacuum of empty space. • Dual Nature: EM radiation behaves as both a wave (interference, diffraction) and a particle (packets of energy called photons). • Ionizing vs. Non-Ionizing: * Non-ionizing (Radio to Visible): Generally safe; does not have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms. • Ionizing (UV to Gamma): High energy; can damage DNA and cells by stripping electrons from atoms.
