Fiddleheads are a dish traditionally enjoyed by Métis people in the spring. Seasonally, the small stalks will pop from the ground and were harvested, cleaned, boiled, and are often braised or sautéed with butter, garlic, lemon, and salt as great source of nutrients. They are rich in potassium, iron, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. It is important to clean them well to remove any traces of toxins that might be in the furled heads. This is done by washing them carefully to remove any brown skin and allow the water to reach between the curls. Have you tried fiddleheads? How do you like to prepare them? #MetisFood #Fiddleheads #NIHM #NIHM2023

It’s fiddlehead season! 🌱 We love fiddleheads for their nutty, sweet, and earthy flavour. Try them on their own, in pasta dishes or as an alternative to green beans, spinach, and asparagus. Fiddleheads must be fully cooked before using them in a recipe, but prepping fiddleheads doesn’t have to be fiddly! Follow these simple steps to eat them safely and make the most of their short season: 👩‍🍳 PREP : 1. Wash the fiddleheads thoroughly in several changes of cold water to remove any residual dirt and brown husk. 2. Once completely clean, pat dry and trim the dark end of the stem. 3. IMPORTANT: Cook the fiddleheads in boiling water for 15 mins or steam them for 10 to 12 mins to ensure they’re fully cooked. 4. Discard the water after boiling/steaming. 5. Shock the fiddleheads in ice cold water for 2 mins to keep their green colour. 6. Drain them and store in freezer bags in the fridge (for up to 1 week) prior to sautéing. #fiddleheads #fiddleheadseason

WHEN TO HARVEST & HOW TO EAT ⬇️ So, lady ferns start popping up again around early April and usually have fiddleheads through mid-late April, depending on your location and the seasonal conditions. 🌿 Lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina) has bright lime green leaves with leaflets that taper at both ends, making a diamond shape (like a lady's hips). They grow 2-3 feet in height and have green to purple-reddish stems. ___ The best way to be sure a fiddlehead belongs to a lady fern is to find the lady ferns in the summer when their leaves are easy to identify, marking that spot on your GPS or @onxhunt app, and returning the next spring. Familiarize yourself with native ferns so you can learn how to identify them from one another: 🚫 Northern maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum) 👍 Northwestern lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina) 🚫 Deer fern (Blechnum spicant) 🚫 Northern wood fern (Dryopteris expansa) 🚫 Common oak fern (Gymnocarpium dryopteris) 🫖 Licorice fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza) 🚫 Common sword fern (Polystichium munitum) 🚫 Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinium) @inaturalistorg is another great resource for identifying and mapping out where you find your fern friends 💚 ___ 🍽 HARVESTING AND COOKING Harvest the tiniest, most compact spiraled fiddleheads honorably. Remember, you are taking this plant's leaves and they die back every year. 👍 A good rule of thumb is no more than 20% of a single plant and in one area. So move around a lot and leave many leaves intact. ‼️ Consider where you're harvesting from: is it safe? Is it legal? Are there enough of these plants here to thrive after harvesting? Also - leave a gift in exchange. Tobacco, songs, poetry, blessings, spreading native plant seeds, and sharing knowledge are good ways to give back 🤗 ‼️ Don't eat fiddleheads raw! The little brown hairs need to be removed first. Then, they need to be steamed or boiled for 10-15 minutes before you consume them. #rainwalkrewild #botany #foraging #edibleplants #pnwplants #plants #pnwnature #pnwoutdoors #pnwforaging #forager #natureeducator #wildfood #nature #outdoors #pnwwomen #Washingtonplants #oregonplants #pacificnorthwest #ferns #fiddleheads #ethnobotany

Fiddleheads are popping up in our parks! The towering redwoods provide a unique backdrop for the new life that unfolds at on the forest floor. Spring is almost here, and we are noticing some hints of the warmer days ahead: fiddleheads! Fiddleheads emerge during early spring as ferns awaken from dormancy. A fiddlehead is a coiled frond of a young fern, resembling the head of a fiddle. Their appearance is short-lived, lasting only a few weeks before they unfurl. #Redwood #Fiddleheads #Spring [Video description: A fiddlehead in the shade of towering old growth redwoods with sunbeams.]

Fiddlehead ferns are a spring foraged snack we really enjoy! They taste a bit like asparagus, but mostly they just taste of spring green-ness! The "fiddlehead" is any variety of fern -- they are the newly formed fronds that are just emerging from the soil but haven't yet unfurled! 🎻 Foraging reminders! Only pick from your own land or from land where you have been given permission to forage! Don't pull every single fiddlehead off the plant!
