I was in the middle of some hypertrophic work for my upper back and shoulders when Ethan sent me some awesome video. He’s back at school and getting those high threshold motor units (HTMU) going.
.
Then I said to myself, “Self, what’s more important for flag running? Hypertrophy or high threshold motor unit recruitment? Of course HTMU recruitment which is best for strength and power development!”
.
Heavy strength training and fast movement training (like plyometrics and ballistics) increase the ability to recruit HTMU and light load strength training to failure generally does not (Beardsley, 2022).
