SNAn insect so large, its wings sound like a helicopter. The elephant beetle or Megasoma elephas, is an iconic rhinoceros beetle species originating across Central and South America. In recent years, they have become popular breeds throughout the beetle rearing industry internationally as well.
Despite their heavy build, these incredible beetles are still able to take flight. Like a living transformer, they unlock their elytra and stretch out their wings. Flying can only be sustained for short periods of time, but is still an extraordinary ability nevertheless.

예초 때문에 먹이가 없어졌길래 나비 유충들을 모아서 먹이가 많은 곳에 풀어줬다. 아마도 조만간 번데기가 될 것 같다.
Due to grass cutting, their food plants were gone,
so I gathered the caterpillars and relocated them to an area with plenty of host plants.
They’ll probably pupate soon.

암끝검은표범나비 Indian fritillary (Argyreus hyperbius)
이 유충은 암끝검은표범나비의 유충으로 주로 제비꽃, 종지나물 등을 먹는다. 성충 암컷의 날개 끝은 검정색이며, 따뜻한 한국 남부지방에서 주로 발견이 되는 종이다.
This little one is an Indian fritillary caterpillar. They love feeding on Viola sororia and Viola mandshurica.
Females have black-tipped wings and are mainly found in the warm southern parts of Korea.

JAEver wondered what moth “dust” actually is? That powdery stuff you get on your fingers after touching the wings of a moth is actually made up of minuscule scales!
Moths and butterflies (and of course, all caterpillars) belong to the insect order Lepidoptera; in Latin, this directly translates to “scaly winged,” in reference to the scales that cover the bodies and wings of adult moths and butterflies!
Lepidopteran scales are highly modified insect hairs, or setae, that likely evolved for a couple of reasons. For one, these thicker scale-like setae provide pretty good insulation, allowing moths to more easily reach the body temperatures they require for effective flight.
Another possible reason for the evolution of this scales is as a defense against spiders! The idea is that the loose, easily shed scales would allow moths and butterflies to escape after becoming entangled in a spider web!
The shiny scales on my finger in the first half of this reel belong to the Carolina sphinx moth (Manduca sexta). Amazing how iridescent they are under the microscope!
The second batch of videos are direct views of the wing of a deceased Cecropia moth (Hyalophora cecropia). Besides the spectacular colors, you can see the diversity of moth scale shapes and sizes even within a single species.

They are North America’s only true hornet species. True hornets are wasps that are found only within the genus (Vespa), and there’s approximately 22 species of hornets in the world. These big beautiful wasps prey on a variety of different insects, such as flies, honeybees, grasshoppers, and many more. In return, this helps balance and keep insect populations in check. They will often strip trees and shrubs of their bark to feed on the sap that’s inside. European Hornets will also use the bark for constructing their large nests. MOI sent another set of wings to @nicoleparishart (also @_soundoftheforest_ on IG). A normal adult Atlas moth measures ~9-10 inches in wingspan, while these giant wings measure in at 120” in wingspan!
The atlas moth has a very unique defense— the top of the Atlas moth’s wings is shaped like a snake head, and when it feels threatened, it spreads its wings, revealing this distinct pattern. By mimicking the appearance of a snake, it can scare away predators, creating the illusion of a large intimidating creature.
