Training the side split is not that simple, but if you change your mindset, you are already winning! Stop doing daily passive streches where you are forcing yourself into the widest straddle you can do, while the “eye of the tiger” plays in the background. . I earned my side split with one session per week! And only increased it to 2 at the end. The reason is, because my side split trainings looked like a strenght program. If you are training your active ranges, your side split will be something I like to call the “all around sidesplit”. Which is easy to maintain, you can access it anywhere and anytime without warm up, more durable, so if you are out of training for a month, you will still have it without warming up. . It’s because you train it actively. You are actually using the whole side split ROM during your trainings. You are gaining strength to be able to control that range of motion. . There are 2 main muscle groups when it comes to the side split, hip adductors and abductors. Also other muscles are assisting. You need to strengthen BOTH muscle groups. If one these 2 groups is weak or falling behind, even if you manage to do a split, it won’t be easly accessable, durable or easy to maintain. Think of like a 4 legged chair. If both back legs are missing, it falls back, same with the 2 on the front. All 4 legs are necessary for functioning. It’s the same with the side split. . So aim for active (both static and dynamic) flexibility exercises 80% of your training and end it with passive static streches at the end. Or even try different methods and choose the best one for you. Pay attention how your body reacts to different flexibility trainings amd stick with the one that fits the best for you! .
