As you stroll through the African Woods at the Safari Park, you may have noticed that one of the okapis does not look like the others. Her name is Ruby, and she's actually a red-flanked duiker that wildlife care specialists recently introduced to Bokasi, a one-year-old okapi.
These unlikely besties have slowly been acclimating to one another over the past 8 months, with opportunities to sniff each other out and solo habitat exploring time for Ruby before their first official meetup. The dynamic duo compliment each other well, with Bokasi's snacking habits encouraging Ruby to forage for his leftover vegetation that falls to the ground like she would in her native habitat.

POIt’s World Okapi Day, and our two beloved okapi boys, Will and Corky, got some extra love today. Here’s three interesting things to know about okapi!
Okapi are native to the rainforest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa.
Although their stripes might look like zebras, they’re actually related to giraffes, which you can see by the shape of their heads and their ossicones, the small horn-looking protrusions on their heads. Plus, like giraffes, in the wild, they have to splay their legs to drink.
Okapi have natural waterproofing! Their fur is coated with a dark oily substance that keeps them dry.
And a bonus fact: they’re an umbrella species! That means they’re a distinctive animal in their biom. Protecting umbrella species helps protect other animals, plants, and bugs.

MOThe okapi, also known as the "forest giraffe," is one of the oldest known mammals, but it was only formally described by scientists in the early 20th century.
Found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this shy and mysterious animal has been a protected cultural and national symbol since 1933.
However, the okapi faces serious threats.
Deforestation, poaching and mining have caused its population to decline by more than 50% in just 15 years. Today, it’s classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
