I had YEARS of experience in special education…and yet, I had never heard of primitive reflex exercises. 🤯 When my ASD/ADHD daughter was struggling, I didn’t know where else to turn. Then we met with an educational specialist who introduced us to these exercises. We went from the processing speed of a kindergartener to a 4th grader in just one year. 🥹 Yes, we tried many things that year… but this was the thing that moved the needle the MOST!!! Here’s the problem: Every OT we met didn’t even have certification in this area. So how are other families supposed to find out about them? ✨ Start here: • Search “primitive reflexes” on YouTube for free videos. • When you’re ready to go deeper, check out @harkla_family primitive reflex course! Two passionate OTs created a course to make these tools available to EVERYONE…and that makes my heart so happy! You can do them at home and even work them into your Charlotte Mason homeschool rhythm!!! If you’re parenting a neurodivergent child, this might just be the missing piece. 💜 Just write “course” down below and I’ll send you the link! *I am a @harkla_family partner. (Read below👇) This may look simple at first, but… If your child struggles with ADHD or anxiety, this 60-second exercise can make a BIG difference. Here’s why... These two boys are doing The Lizard Exercise, and it’s one of the easiest ways to calm an overstimulated nervous system and organize the brain for better attention, emotional control, and learning. ➡️ If your child melts down easily ➡️ Gets overwhelmed by noises or chaos ➡️ Has trouble sitting still or focusing ➡️ Struggles with impulsivity or transitions ➡️ Or seems anxious about “small” things… You’re not alone — and it’s not bad parenting. Many kids today have primitive reflexes that never fully integrated, which keeps their brain stuck in survival mode instead of problem-solving mode. The Lizard helps because it activates: ✔️ Cross-body movement (boosts focus & coordination) ✔️ Vestibular system (supports emotional regulation) ✔️ Core & midline (for body awareness) ✔️ Brainstem → cerebellum → cortex pathway (for attention + learning) Together, that means: 🧠 calmer nervous system 🧠 fewer emotional outbursts 🧠 better attention 🧠 more confidence 🧠 improved impulse control If you want more natural home-based strategies like this for ADHD… 💬 Comment “SPOT” to get into our free training. And if you want to learn exactly why primitive reflexes matter — and what you can do to help your child from home, we’re hosting a free webinar called: “3 Simple Secrets to Solving ADHD 100% Naturally From Home.” Happening soon + spots are filling quickly — just comment SPOT and we’ll save you one 💛 #adhdsupport #primitivereflexes #childdevelopment #ADHDKids #

1. Primitive Reflexes: they are automatic movements that babies are born with, and they should naturally integrate (go away) as the child develops. When these reflexes stay active beyond the baby stage, they can interfere with a child’s ability to learn further, focus, speak and regulate emotions. The Moro reflex can keep kids in a constant fight-or-flight state, making them anxious & easily overwhelmed. A retained ATNR can make it hard for a child to cross the midline, which affects writing, reading, and coordination. 🧠 Speech, balance, posture, & eye tracking can all be delayed or disorganized because of lingering primitive reflexes. Working with these reflexes through specific movement exercises helps the brain & body finally “talk” to each other the right way. If your child is struggling in multiple areas (think speech delays, sensory overload, or trouble with motor skills) primitive reflexes could be the hidden block. 2. Gut Health: Nutrition, detox and a healthy gut is the foundation for a healthy brain. When the gut is inflamed due to poor diet, food sensitivities, or parasites, kids may struggle with sleep, mood swings, and focus. In addition to this, sugar, processed foods, and dairy often contribute to this inflammation, so a clean, nutrient-dense diet makes a massive difference. Gentle detoxes, especially for parasites, can help eliminate hidden infections that cause irritability, poor nutrient absorption, & even speech issues. Supplements like probiotics, magnesium, omega-3s, and zinc can support gut healing & help regulate the nervous system. When the body is nourished, detoxed, and supported properly, kids are better able to engage, learn, and thrive - inside & out. 💡When babies are moving - they are learning through their bodies. Now combine these two together with a consistent approach - there is no way you won’t notice the difference. 3. Daily Schedule & Repetition help wire the brain & it’s not boring, it’s building. Each repeated activity helps strengthen connections in the brain. Whether it’s reflex exercises, or mealtimes - consistency is 🔑 #autism #autismroadmap #autismmom #reflexintegration #primitivereflexes

Lizard exercises for the ASTNR primitive reflex. Integration of primitive reflexes is imperative for optimal brain development. These exercises are designed to integrate the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex. Repeat these exercises for up to a minute twice daily. It is more effective to have child turn eyes to the extended (stretched out arm) and also move to a metronome beat once they have mastered the movements. The metronome beat can be placed on one side of child in order to stimulate the weaker hemisphere. The placement of the children is to stimulate the weaker hemisphere. The immune and nervous systems in people with symptomatic hypermobility like hEDS and HSD are different. I recently sent out an email newsletter sharing some of the new and exciting research in this area, and so many of you replied saying that this was very helpful and validating. If you’d like me to send it to you, comment ImmuneME and I’ll forward it to you! I can go into much more of the nitty gritty in the email than I can here in a post + caption. I’m still recovering from a stomach bug and easing back into my normal routine. I did my little rooftop wake up flow for the first time in a few weeks today, and it was not easy. But I didn’t push. I followed the exact principles I teach here, and thankfully I finished feeling better than when I started instead of worse. Many providers are still under informed about the systemic nature of hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder. There’s a common assumption that joint stabilization exercises are THE solution. Don’t get me wrong….strength and stability are important. It’s the main thing I help people with. But they are only one piece of a much bigger picture. The complexity of symptomatic hypermobility is one reason standard rehab and fitness approaches can backfire. We may feel fine during the activity, but recovery mechanisms can be pretty significantly altered. That can show up as mast cell flares, dysautonomia symptoms, pain that is way out of proportion to the activity or crushing energy crashes after what looks like a pretty “nothing” level of effort. To someone who doesn’t understand the physiology, that can look like being overly sensitive. But pain and flares are not just about tissue damage. They are about immune signaling, autonomic regulation, and nervous system load. This is why starting slower and giving your WHOLE organism time to recover can make such a big difference. TLDR: be kind to yourself PS. You’ve been asking for details of this warm up. I’ve filmed it and will be sharing it on YouTube soon!! #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #hEDS #EDS #Hypermobility #HSD

🧠 Better Sleep, Better Focus: The ADHD-Glymphatic System Link! 👇 Great news for those managing ADHD! Recent research suggests a link between the brain’s “lymphatic system”—called the Glymphatic System—and ADHD-related behaviors. If the glymphatic system is clogged and not clearing waste efficiently, behaviors associated with ADHD can worsen. Improving this clearance is key to decreasing those negative symptoms! ✨ Why Movement Matters: The glymphatic system does most of its work when you are sleeping. We can support this process before bed with specific movements that encourage Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) flow. 🧘‍♀️ The Movement Hack: Seal Pose to Downward Dog This transition encourages the thoracic spine (mid-back) to flex and extend. This spinal movement helps promote CSF flow, which, in turn, improves glymphatic clearance. Try doing this movement for a couple of minutes before bedtime to support your brain’s natural cleanup cycle. A cleaner brain can mean better focus! 🌙 #ADHD #GlymphaticSystem #BrainHealth #Neuroscience #ADHDhacks #MovementTherapy #SleepHygiene #FunctionalNeurology #drerichansen #brainandbodyhealth #primitivereflexes

All behavior is communication. The real question isn’t what your child is doing, it’s why. When you pause and look beyond the surface, you may discover that behaviors are your child’s way of asking for connection, support, or help with a skill they haven’t mastered yet. Here’s a glimpse into what some behaviors can really mean, because understanding leads to growth, not just reaction.⁣ ⁣ ✨ Every behavior tells a story.
