I’m talking from experience here: a few hours without water on a hot day can mean disaster. Coturnix are hardy little birds, but when it comes to water, they don’t mess around—and neither should we.
Whether you’re raising quail on a small urban homestead or out in the country with a little more room to grow, keeping an eye on water levels every single day is a non-negotiable part of the routine.
Here’s a tip: automate where you can. I love gravity-fed waterers or nipple systems that reduce spills and keep the water cleaner longer. Just make sure you’re still checking them daily—because a clogged system is just as dangerous as an empty one.

✔️ Warmth: Use a heat lamp or brooder plate to keep them cozy.
✔️ Bedding: Newly hatched quail chicks are tiny and unsteady on their feet, so use paper towels to provide a non-slip surface. After 3–5 days, you can switch to pine shavings or hemp for better absorbency and odor control.
✔️ Water Safety: Add small rocks or marbles to their water dish to prevent drowning.
✔️ Feed: High-protein game bird starter to help them grow strong!

COWelcome to Quail headquarters! Here’s what I’ve got in my quail pen 🥰
🌿 Quail feed - they need a higher protein feed than chickens
🌿 Fresh water - highly recommend raising from the ground, keeps it super clean
🌿 Dust bath - how they clean and pamper themselves!
🌿 Shell grit + crushed eggshells - great for extra calcium supplement
🌿 Habitat items (very important as quail like lots of shelter to feel safe) - logs, branches, hides, stones, plants. These can be rearranged now and then to keep things fresh!
🌿 Leafy garden scraps - can also be used as habitat but mostly for eating
🌿 Hygrometer/thermometer - optional but I find it really helpful to monitor temperature and comfort levels. Quails are more tolerant of extreme temps than chickens but still best to avoid of course!

❓Why keep quail❓
🐤 Quail make really interesting little pets.
🐤 They need less space than other poultry
🐤 They are really inquisitive and can become very friendly.
🐤 They are cost effective egg producers.
🐤 They start to lay at just 8-12 weeks old.
🐤 They lay amazing, tasty eggs!
👩🏫 Quail Information
🥚 Quail can be very productive, capable of laying 230 eggs a year.
🦅 Quail spend their time on the ground and generally only fly up vertically when frightened! They don’t generally use ramps so everything for them needs to be at ground level and they don’t use perches.
🌳 Quail love hiding under things so give them plenty of cover to go under - put branches in their run, plant pots on their side and things to hide in and under.
🍱 Quail need a high protein layers feed of around 18-20% protein and eat around 15g each day so are very cost effective to feed.
🐤 They live around 2-4 years.
🕰️ You will need lots of time just to sit and watch them do their quail things! They are fascinating to watch and are always very busy.
🛀 Quail are obsessed with dust bathing, pop a tray of fine sand in with them for hours of entertainment.
