I have a love / hate relationship with Shot Put, albeit, I am starting to love it again... A good throw in competition and breakthroughs in training usually changes that. Here’s the fundamentals for the process 1. Technique - proper timing of foot, hip and upper body 2. Strength & Conditioning 3. Grunt, don’t be soft There are text books on technique, so I am not even going to try write about that all here. I always recommend get a good coach to guide you. But the basics of shot for me are timing of postiions. If you get this right, you don’t have to think about throwing hard. You build tension and the release is beautiful.

Most high school throwers try to learn the spin all at once. That’s why they struggle. The rotational shot put isn’t one big move. It’s layers. Start with the grip. If the shot is buried in your palm or hanging off your fingers, you’re already leaking power. It should sit across your fingers, pressed firm into the neck, elbow up. Strong setup = strong throw. Then build from the ground up. Master the stand throw first. 70% of your weight on the right leg. Heel-toe alignment. Right hip fires. Left side blocks. Arm finishes last. If your hips don’t lead, you’ll always feel weak at the front. Next, own the half turn. Push off the left. Keep it low. Land balanced. Stop and control it before you ever try to throw full speed. Balance before speed. Always. Add the walk-through. Stay linear into the middle. Don’t rush the spin. Smooth feet create violent hips. Before full throws, drill 360s on the left foot. Build control. Then connect the pieces. Only after all that should you worry about the reverse. Most throwers skip steps. That’s why they stay stuck. Build it layer by layer and the spin starts to feel simple. Anna is locking in some big improvements in the shot put ring. This throw landed just under 35 feet, and her 37+ goal is coming into sight. She’s been working on footwork and getting across the ring stronger and lower through her glide. Creating a better A-frame out of the glide is helping her set up more power at the front. Next steps are keeping her power foot more closed to really load the hips. We’ll also keep working on separating her hips and shoulders for maximum torque. A firmer block on the left side and finishing tall will help her transfer all that power into the shot.
