Why Timing Your Sprints Is A Game Changer 🚀 This might be the most underrated tool for speed development & it happens to be the simplest. Last year, I read a study from @SimpliFaster talking about the impact of adding sprint timing & adding constraints when training athletes for speed. They talked about how athletes who ran with a constraint (either racing next to another athlete or against a clock) were faster on average than a group running simply for a specified distance. When you have someone timing your sprints, there’s a competitive element that you won’t get from just running. You naturally push yourself harder to get as good a time as possible. The net impact is part physical & part psychological. The impact is similar to how Louie Simmons used to use verbal cueing when doing dynamic efforts in the weight room. By verbally pushing his athletes to lift harder during a set, there was a subsequent difference in firing capacity that resulted in higher bar velocities. Similar concept, different demands & constraints.
