QUWhat is Split-Boarding?👇🏻
First off, a split-board is a snowboard that turns into the skis! How cool right?!
Splitboarding is a way to snowboard in the backcountry without using chairlifts by gliding uphill on skis & skins and then riding your snowboard back down.
How it works:
- Your snowboard splits into skis for uphilling
- Skins attach to the bottom to grip the snow when you climb
- At the top, you remove your bindings, snap your skis into a snowboard and put your bindings back on
- Then you ride down!
What people use it for:
- Access to remote, uncrowded areas in the backcountry
- Uphilling at resorts on groomed areas before they open
- Full-body workout
- No lift lines!
What you need:
- Split board + special bindings (plus pucks see if your bindings come w them)
- Skins
- Avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe)
- Poles
- Knowledge of terrain, weather and snow conditions
If your are accessing the backcountry, it’s important you take your AIARE 1 avalanche safety course!!! Being in the backcountry is no joke with avalanche danger!!
Have you ever heard of this before? I’ve been snowboarding most of my life but started splitboarding only last year & it’s been a really cool way to see more outside of the resort :)
