Just recently @kai_lenny took my Krypt MT5 surfmat for a spin at Honolua Bay. Possibly quiet a historic moment in time. So I reached out to my good friends and film makers Dan Merkel @merkelmedia and Dick Hoole @dickhoole to see if any other footage of surfmats at the bay existed. Apart from Dan being out there on his surfmat shooting footage in the 1970s it seemed there was non. Dick mentioned that Nat Young @bahpat Bob McTavish @mctavishsurf and George Greenough #georgegreenough where there on Maui in late1967 testing Bobs Fantastic Plastic Machine. Now Bob McTavish is one of my mentors. Bob taught me a production surfboard shaping technique which I still use to this day and how to wield a power planner like a Jedi light saber. But I digress from the story. So I asked Bob did you see GG ride his Converse Hodgman mat out at Honolua Bay in 1967 and the answer was YES. Now there might be footage in the Paul Witzig film Hot Generation but its yet to be confined if it is Honolua. Either way Kai on the mat at Honolua in December 2023 is possible the first time in 56 years since December 1967 that a surfmat has grace the scared grounds of Maui. If anyone is aware of any other surfmat footage at the bay exists please let us know.
