🔍 Shadow Smart Mistake:
Students shadow ONE dentist for 200+ hours. Schools want breadth, not depth in one office. I shadowed 6-7 specialties and learned I wanted general dentistry. Without seeing perio, ortho, endo, I couldn’t have explained WHY in interviews.
🤝 Serve the Underserved Mistake:
Students think they need to be translators or DAs to volunteer at clinics. Wrong. These clinics need bodies. They’ll take anyone. I volunteered at Missions of Mercy and that made me want to become a general dentist.
⏳ Stick to Something Mistake:
Students pick 5+ activities and spread thin. You can’t write compelling essays about surface-level involvement. Pick 2-3 non-dental things and go deep. I taught Sunday school to 5th-8th grade boys. Explaining theology to middle schoolers? Same skill I’ll use explaining treatments to patients.

As soon as you’re interested. Shadow. Dabble. See if you actually like it.
💡 How This Translates to Interviews:
“Why this experience?” needs depth. Shadowing 6 specialties let me say “I chose general dentistry because I saw every angle.” Teaching Sunday school let me say “I already practice breaking down complex concepts for people without my background.”
Shadow Smart (150 hrs across specialties) ➔ Serve the Underserved (clinics like Missions of Mercy) ➔ Stick to Something (2-3 deep commitments, 150 non-dental hrs).
