Thinking about how FAR Ember has come since he was spotted on the side of a rural road by a county worker. Ember had been hit by a car in-the-middle-of-nowhere and was badly injured. The worker tried his best to catch Ember but Ember kept limping into the blackberry bushes. The worker reached out, hoping to find help. Kyle and I were out town at the time (looking at a possible transport vehicle to help more cats).....Not knowing what to do, I asked our Facebook community if someone could go catch him and get him to our vet. Several people jumped into action to help. Chidori caught him and brought him to the vet. His front leg was shattered and broken. The bone was popping through the tissue. Wound was badly infected. He smelled like rot and death. The leg was necrotic. He had been out there for quite awhile, unable to walk, unable to find shelter or food. It was a cold, rainy week. Incredibly, although the leg was necrotic, the infection had not spread. His bloodwork was relatively clear of infection. His temp was cold and he was underweight..... but he was still a candidate for surgery. After his leg was amputated, he weighed just 5lbs. Those first few days, I was not sure if Ember would survive..... I had him on a heating pad and the heaters turned up to 75 in the office. His temperature would not reach 100. He was barely moving. Every hour, I found myself checking on him to see if he was still breathing.....A week later, he just popped up and was like, "Hey, I am going to be OK. You can stop worrying about me." And that has sort of been the way things have been going.... He has gained 2lbs in three weeks. He loves to eat. He gets SO excited when you say his name and he rolls over and makes air biscuits. He loves snuggling. Loves being carried everywhere But week, something just is not right with his amputation site 😢 It is not pink flesh on pink flesh. It is dead leather skin attached to pink flesh and it is falling apart....😢 I am not sure if the vets will need to debride. Or if he will need completely new stitches connecting healthy skin to healthy skin. He will see the vet on Saturday.
