Kept things structured from day one — early mobility, progressive loading, and consistent rehab. ⁣ Being a physio doesn’t mean avoiding injury… I went to see a Physio and had guidance from my running coach. I still need to be told what to do and be accountable! ↓ ATFL Reconstruction Rehab Here’s a breakdown of a mid-late stage ankle rehab, with the primary focus on conditioning the ankle to take load with different tempos, heights, angles and intensities. 1️⃣ Inversion Eversion Lifts • Warm up for general ankle mobility and getting co-contraction of the muscles around the ankle 2️⃣ Double Leg Pogos • Working on being springy and poppy on the ground, improving rate of force development 3️⃣ Tuck Jumps • Increased foot height off the ground + needing to attack the ground puts more strain around the ankle and foot • Simple progression from double leg pogos 4️⃣ Ankle Iso Push • Great at getting any inhibition out of the ankle • Working on peak plantarflexor force so we can push the ground away and run fast 5️⃣ Calf Raise Switch • Simple endurance option, holding max height for 5 counts before changing • Working on the inner range of plantarflexion that is usually lacking with ankle and foot injuries 6️⃣ Heavy Calf Raises • Our calves and soleus take 6-8x our bodyweight when running, so bodyweight calf raises or dumbbell calf raises dont cut it • Train calves the same way you’d train any other muscle - heavy 7️⃣ Balance w Cognition • Our brain has a limited computing bandwidth and we cant spend a large % of it on the field thinking of the ankle • Challenging cognition during balance tasks helps to train subconscious adaptations in the nervous system so we can focus on the more important things on the pitch Share this with someone who’s had chronic issues with their ankles!

Bringing my own injuries to scan club! With @function2fitness & @3rclinic Previous sprain injury increases recurrent ankle sprain risk so rehab and correct management is essential. Interestingly , after an acute sprain ankle some studies have reported up to 40% of the patients in the general population report residual symptoms. So, I sustained a Grade I injury which is basically a mild injury/sprain or a ligament fibre stretch without macroscopic rupture. There is clinically minor swelling and palpatory tenderness, hardly any functional loss, and no increased instability. I have pain when plantar flexing but no pain when walking. There was some hypo echoic fluid surrounding my tendon and the ATFL was quite thickened and looking back, I injured it quite a lot when I was dancing in my teens but when I got into running and strength training my ankles got much stronger. What’s the plan? Now this is a mild injury so I hope to get back to running within the next 2 weeks as there is little structural damage. But I will be mindful of healing times, pain and swelling. If you have a minor ankle sprain the advice would be to use the POLICE principes for the first few days, gentle movement to restore range and then a gradual return to running. I will avoid any end range plantar flexion stretches or work with bands whilst I let it settle and stand to bring in some balance and proprioception exercises this week! #anklepain #anklesprain #atfl #ankleinjury #physiotips

A little background on my surgery: I had torn ligaments on both inside and outside of my left ankle, worn out cartilage and arthritis, torn Achilles tendon, torn plantar fascia, chipped bone, bone spur and bruised bone…. So it was quite a major repair work haha, like going to the car mechanic to overhaul the engine!
