HEECT (electro convulsive therapy) is a medical treatment that helps the brain reset when someone is very unwell with depression. It’s done in a hospital while the person is asleep under anaesthetic, so they don’t feel anything.
Doctors use a very small, controlled electrical signal to help the brain ‘reboot’. It’s kind of like restarting a computer when it’s frozen. After the treatment, many people feel clearer, more stable, and able to get better more quickly.

TEElectroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment in which carefully controlled electrical currents are applied to the brain to induce a brief seizure. While the idea may seem unsettling, the procedure is carried out under general anesthesia with muscle relaxants, so patients do not feel pain or discomfort. Developed in the 1930s, ECT has a complicated past, as early versions were often performed without anesthesia or adequate safeguards, contributing to fear and lasting stigma. Modern ECT, however, is highly regulated, closely monitored, and significantly safer and more precise than its early forms. Today, it is most commonly used for severe depression, bipolar disorder, and certain cases of schizophrenia, particularly when medications and other therapies have failed. For some individuals, ECT can provide rapid, even life-saving relief from symptoms such as intense suicidal thoughts, psychosis, or catatonia. Although the treatment remains controversial and can cause temporary side effects like memory problems or confusion, major medical organizations—including the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization—recognize ECT as an effective and important option when used appropriately. In contemporary psychiatry, ECT stands as both a product of medical progress and a critical source of hope for patients with severe mental illness.

But you’re worth it- get all the information on all the treatments that might help you, and then you can make an informed decision. CLECT is so interesting to me and it seems like such an archaic form of therapy, crazy enough, we still use it today. ECT induces a 20-50 second seizure for patients suffering with depression, catatonia, bipolar, neuromalignant syndrome, and psychosis. ECT is most effective over many treatments, typically several per week over the span of multiple weeks. It even has a 70-90% success rate.
