Il en résulte une interaction rythmique qui brouille la frontière entre les voix, créant des motifs hypnotiques, imbriqués les uns dans les autres. Retro Future is another track that I wrote during my time at Berklee. This one, specifically, was an exercise in writing with "hockets" which our friends at Wikipedia call, "the rhythmic linear technique using the alternation of notes, pitches, or chords" -- basically, you make a pattern out of some notes, but you alternate the pattern between instruments. Think of it like counting to 10 with a friend with one of you saying even numbers only and the other saying the odds.⁠ ⁠ At the time, I was exploring default channel strip patches in Logic (because someone else in class was making heavy use of them and I thought they sounded surprisingly good), so I picked a few of those and got started. It ended up sounding to me like a vision of the future as told by the past. Hence, retro future.⁠ ⁠ Streamable, downloadble, and buyable on Bandcamp! And coming to Spotify soon⁠ ⁠ churzzzz 🍷⁠ -str

Had the most wonderful weekend recording with @esmeohlive and @chrisberrymusic , learning so much from his experience living and traveling throughout Africa. So much groove, wisdom, dance and beauty… This tune is called Mbavarira, from Zimbabwe; listening to Chris’ mbira was so inspiring, playing these amazing hockets, and navigating through these “deliciously weird chords”. At some point, I started loosing my mind, as in a trance-like state, enjoying every inch of this groove. Injinji. #zimbabwe #africanmusic #groove #mbira #improvisation

Maple Dance - Tree Hockets Feeling so grateful to be at a point in university where I am given the time and opportunity to perform my own compositions. I feel very proud of this piece! It still needs a few revisions, but I can’t believe I birthed this from my mind. The whole end goal is to create three English horn duets with the idea of a hocket and the shape of leaves in mind. I grabbed inspiration from the change of seasons and seeing the maple leaves near my home change colours and slowly die, yet stand joyously flapping in the wind. Maple leaves (atleast the variety I seen often) have three large points of equal distance from each other, rising up and falling. This inspired the main motif based off of minor 3rds. I invert the rhythms and create a larger melody out of the overlap of the English horns, and although it is not strictly a Hocket where neither performer plays at the same time, I aim to evoke similar playful colours with dense melodies. Thankful for my partner in crime Sara for playing with me! It introduced me to the technique of hocketing, and remains one of my favorite releases of the past decade. Go buy it on bandcamp this very instant. Here, we explore all of the sonic nooks and crannies between the notes of the first two chord groupings in the third song on the record. I could do this for hours. Thanks to Meara and @cantaloupeny for letting me play with the audio.
