TRUTH: 🌟Tier 1 lessons can and should be taught in small groups, with time for students to practice the skill they have just been explicitly taught. “The best opportunity to increase reading outcomes for your students is to maximize the time that they spend in small groups, including small groups in tier 1” -Dr. Stephanie Stollar 🌟“There is a wide range of needs in kindergarten and first grade classrooms and it wouldn’t make sense to teach everyone the same thing.” -Stephanie Stollar 🌟This doesn’t mean withholding access to the code! And they’re right: ✔ Testing doesn’t magically diagnose a disability. ✔ RTI/MTSS is designed to prevent misidentification. ✔ Evaluations cannot legally be delayed just to keep a student in intervention. But here is where we should be focusing… -schools are underfunded -interventionists are limited - general education teachers are carrying Tier 1–3 for 25+ students -school psychologists are serving far beyond recommended caseloads The system is already strained and getting worse .. And sometimes eligibility reflects years of limited access to intervention — not just disability. This isn’t about blaming teachers. Or psychs. Or parents. IT’S ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING THAT WE’RE ASKING A MULTI-TIERED SUPPORT SYSTEM TO RUN WITHOUT MULTI-TIERED RESOURCES And the people at this table? Teachers, not just parents, can activate "Child Find" and that is the district's responsibility to locate and assess any child with a suspected disability. If you remind the SSP/SST team of the Child Find responsibility in the meeting, you might be known as THAT TEACHER, and you know that that's a good thing! Here are some of the things we look out for during an assessment which can contribute to — Running assessment with MTSS (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) Here are some of the things we look out for during an assessment which can contribute to the development of the dreaded MTSS aka shin splints. Low cadence and over striding are two major features we see here and the first videos. These can be changed relatively quickly (even in the 1 session) and can result in reduction of symptoms. In this video, the legend @marcosapich went through an assessment after developing MTSS and we noticed that he had a low cadence (160) and an over stride. Although we had to spend some time deloading to let his symptoms settle, we have worked on a few things to increase cadence which has reduced the over stride and he is back up and running with no symptoms!
