If you’ve ever had a reaction to something that felt surprising or disproportionate, it’s not a character flaw, and it makes perfect sense when you understand how memory works in the nervous system. A colleague of mine, @theanxietymd, once described triggers as emotional age regression, and here’s the science behind it. Most people think of memory as explicit memory. This is the kind that is verbal, chronological, and story based. You can usually name when something happened, where it happened, and how it unfolded. But trauma often lives in a different type of memory system entirely: through implicit memory, or body memory. Implicit memory is stored as sensation, emotion, impulse, tension, and learned response, similar to muscle memory. Here is the part most people are never taught. Implicit memory does not carry a timestamp. There is no clear sense of past versus present. So when it is activated, it does not feel like remembering. It feels like now. This is why a trigger can feel so immediate and overwhelming. Your adult mind may not recall a clear story, but your nervous system is responding as if the original experience is happening in real time. This is not a failure or regression. It is your body doing exactly what it learned to do to survive. So instead of asking “what is wrong with me?”, a gentler and more accurate question becomes “what did my body learn to do to get through what it lived through?” Comment PODCAST to learn all about how trauma memory works in the latest podcast episode, or PROGRAM to join me in the Body-First Healing program to move forward without looking back. #traumahealing #nervoussystem #somatichealing #bodyfirsthealing healingjourney

🧠 You’re Not Forgetful — Just Distracted ✨ What if I told you your brain can hold 2.5 petabytes of information — nearly a million gigabytes? Enough to store everything you’ve ever seen, heard, or felt in a lifetime. 🌌 And yet… we forget where we left our keys. Not because our memory is weak, but because our attention is scattered. When we’re constantly stressed, the brain fires through the limbic system — the center of survival — instead of the networks for focus, regulation, and recall. We’re not running out of memory. We’re running out of presence. 🌿 When we slow down, breathe, and calm the nervous system, the whole brain begins to synchronize — and remembering becomes natural again. Your mind is vast. But only a still mind can access its depth. 🕊️ — 🎙 Voiceover: ElevenLabs 🎼 BGM: Idea 22 – Gibran Alcocer 🎞 Visuals: @higgsfield.ai 🌍 Explore more reflections on mind & awareness → SoulUnity.art 💬 If this resonated, drop a 🧠 and share it forward. #memory #mindfulness #neuroscience #awareness #soulinsights_

You can’t always stop the feeling. But you can choose what you do with it. That intense reaction you have? The one that feels like it comes out of nowhere? That’s not you being irrational. That’s your implicit memory at work. Even if you don’t remember what happened, your nervous system does. That anger, shutdown, or panic? It’s not about now—it’s a part of you trying to protect what once felt unsafe. Viktor Frankl spoke of a powerful truth: Between stimulus and response, there is a space. That space is where your freedom lives. It’s where your agency begins. Practice stepping into that space, not to suppress your emotions, but to choose how you want to respond. Over time, that space grows. Your nervous system softens. Your reactions become less automatic and more aligned. Inside my live virtual cohorts, this is the work we do. We don’t aim for perfection. We aim for that one breath, that one pause, that one new response that rewires everything. 💬 Comment “WAITLIST” to be notified when the next cohort opens. #emotionalregulation #traumaresponse #implicitmemory #gabormate #viktorfrankl #nervoussystemhealing #innerchildhealing #coachingprogram #healingjourney #posttraumaticgrowth #cbtnotcliche #selfawareness #selfregulation #emotionalresilience #neuroplasticity #reparenting #relationshipskills

Have you ever learned something only to forget it within days? 🤔 In the 1880s, Ebbinghaus pioneered memory studies and discovered the Forgetting Curve, showing how memories fade quickly. For “non-meaningful” information (e.g. work presentations or interview answers), our brains can discard it in just days — just 3 days, according to research. There’s some good news here– All is not lost! If you want to remember something longer than just 3 days, Chun & Heo (2018) discovered an optimal review frequency to help you retain the content. After you first learn whatever it is you want to remember, 1️⃣ Review it on Day 1 3️⃣ Review it on Day 3 6️⃣ And review it again on Day 6 Voilà! The secret to memory mastery. 💪 What techniques do you find effective for boosting your memory and retaining information?
