FIWomen can and do work on offshore oil rigs across a range of roles — and the industry is becoming more inclusive every year. Here’s what to know:
• Jobs available: Medic, chef, safety officer, engineer, geologist, roustabout, crane operator, rope access tech, electrician, and more.
• Pay: Equal pay for equal roles — many women earn $120,000 to $200,000+ AUD per year depending on the position.
• Roster: Common swings are 2:2, 3:3, or 4:4. Travel and food/accommodation are provided.
• Living: Women usually have separate sleeping quarters and bathrooms when available. Facilities are improving across the industry.
• Safety: Strict safety protocols apply to everyone. Respect in the workplace is legally enforced, with zero tolerance for harassment.
• Entry-level roles: Roustabout, steward/utility, or admin support — good starting points with career progression.
• Certs needed: BOSIET/FOET, MSIC, medical, and trade or relevant qualifications if applying for technical roles.
More women are joining offshore every year, proving it’s not just a man’s game. If you’re physically fit, pass the medicals, and have the right mindset, there’s nothing stopping you.

BEGetting paid $600,000 a year as a marine engineer on an offshore oil rig sounded like a dream come true — the kind of opportunity people wait their whole lives for.
But no one warned me what it would actually be like to be the only woman out here. ⚙️🌊
At first, I thought I could handle it — I’ve always been strong, independent, and focused on my work. But the stares, the whispers, the constant feeling of being watched… it was something else entirely.
You learn fast that respect out here isn’t given — it’s earned.
You eat, sleep, and work beside the same crew for weeks straight. You climb 200-foot ladders in storm winds, fix engines at 3AM, and fight for your place in a world built for men.
But here’s the truth:
The rig taught me more about grit, confidence, and resilience than any classroom ever could.
And when I see the look on people’s faces after I tell them what I do — that’s when I remember why I never quit.
This life isn’t for everyone…
but it made me who I am. 💪🌊
