After seeing videos such as this, it should come as no surprise that fish in the North Pacific were found to ingest 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic each year. Ingesting plastic on this scale can cause intestinal injury and death and transfers plastic up the food chain to bigger fish, marine mammals, and human seafood eaters.
Today, we have five major “garbage patches'' in the ocean. The garbage patches are formed by circulating currents, called gyres, that navigate debris to a central location, and these locations are massive. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, situated between California and Japan, is now estimated to be three times the surface area of France.
We must do all that we can to prevent them from getting any larger. Go to the link in our bio to learn more.
