When a small amount of acid is added to a buffer, the pH *barely moves*. Why? The added H⁺ doesn’t just float around in the system. It gets "removed" by the conjugate base, which reacts with it to form more weak acid (HA). And because that reaction uses up the extra H⁺, the equilibrium shifts to the left-hand side to oppose the change. 👆That single sentence is the *perfect* exam response. It shows you understand: • the conjugate pair • the equilibrium shift • and why the pH stays almost constant Once you can explain that in one clean paragraph, buffer questions become some of the easiest marks on the paper.
