The Stanton Street Shul (Congregation Bnai Jacob Anshe Brzezan), located at 180 Stanton Street on the Lower East Side, is a historic tenement-style synagogue built in 1913. Structure: A three-story brick and stone building that features a basement beis midrash (study hall) and a main sanctuary, with a notably modest, intimate atmosphere.
Survival and Revival: The synagogue survived the decline of the Lower East Side Jewish community. In 2002, a contentious, high-profile legal dispute over the potential sale of the building to a non-Jewish entity was settled, leading to a revitalization of the congregation.
Present Day: It functions as a welcoming, modern Orthodox, and eclectic community that serves a diverse, intergenerational mix of members.
The shul is considered a living, "surrogate" for the hundreds of smaller, immigrant-founded shuls that have since been demolished or repurposed on the Lower East Side.
