ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) is an evidence based therapeutic modality that helps us redirect our energy from fighting what is a natural human response (pain) and instead using that energy to build a life full of meaning and purpose. A lot of the work done in ACT is in confronting the many ways we have learned to avoid our pain that at the end of day only add to our suffering. I absolutely love ACT. It has made a huge difference in my own life and I have seen it help many clients who have felt stuck fighting back against their thoughts and emotions, unsure how to move forward. Here are a few things I might say in session that come from an ACT perspective. We are all talking about supplements for sleep but not enough about the one intervention that has actually been shown to help chronic sleep issues, namely CBT-I. 1. I have fallen into the traps of situationships and holding hope for things to shift, ignoring the mixed messages 2. I’ve absolutely struggled with feeling secure and knowing my worth in relationships 3. I can be snappy sometimes in my marriage and have really focused on learning to address this, catch this and hold myself accountable 4. I have stayed in relationships too long out of fear of hurting the other person 5.. We’ve done couples/premarital counseling (and loved it!!!) 6. I haven’t lived through every relationship experience as a relationship therapist, and always focus on learning about each person’s unique experiences-though I still feel equipped to support folks in many ways, and will gladly share what I haven’t personally experienced 7. As a therapist of color I am in a constant phase of unlearning when it comes to some relationship & boundary expectations that do not consider culturally collective communities 8. I’m in an interracial marriage which has required intentional space for conversations about race & identity- it can be really vulnerable at times. (Grateful for a safe space) 9. I may be a relationship therapist but I don’t hold a master rulebook for relationships. "Is it over? This is a question I get all the time. Is it over? How do I know when it’s over? This question is different from how long should I fight for our marriage and I’ll get into that in a bit. The truth is your marriage is over when you give up. When you want it to be over. Remember a marriage is different to a dating relationship. A marriage is a true commitment and commitments can test you. There will be highs and lows and seasons of challenge. Now for the question of how long should I fight (this is probably a whole new reel) but I’ll touch on it. I believe that you should give it at least a year of knowledgeable effort (meaning you have hired a coach, you have professional help, you are doing the right things) before you give up. I do not believe that you should stay for years with someone who doesn’t value you or want to be with you but I do believe that most relationships can be made awesome when you know how! Context is especially important here! I’m not referring to situations in relationships that haven’t been addressed or that genuinely and deeply impact someone in the relationship. This isn’t meant to invalidate anyone’s emotions. This skit is simply highlighting how OCD/anxiety can show up, especially when it comes to rumination. We can still feel hurt and that’s valid/normal - but in this example, you see how it can feel hard to even sit with those feelings and feel pressured to “move on.” For many people with OCD specifically, there can be a strong urge to keep having the same conversation over and over until it feels “right,” even when nothing new is being said. The conversation could happen for days and it still not feel like “enough.” This can happen even with everyday conflict or small misunderstandings - these feelings may make these moments feel more intense and heavy. As always, relating to this post does not necessarily mean you live with OCD and/or anxiety. This skit simply shows an example of how rumination and the “just right” feeling can show up in relationships. #ocdawareness #anxietyawareness #relationshipocd #rocd #relationshipanxiety

As my therapist told me how to heal from this and why I am having these commitment issues, I just froze. She was right. when I am getting close to someone, I start to feel bound to them, not free. I feel trapped. unconsciously thinking I will not be able to leave this man if things get toxic. Forever caged. This results of the fact that my parents stayed together despite all the toxic traits, teaching little Saskia the illusion that I have to stay even if things get though and hurtful. Becoming an adult who avoids commitment👋🏼 What I did to heal this: I have to realise that I am not at all trapped in relationships. I can say no. I can leave. Also who am I to decide that my parents aren’t happy the way things are ? It was MY reality as a child, doesn’t make it the whole truth. 1. Started to see my parents as people instead of putting them on a pedestal 2. Making myself aware of the fact that I CAN say No. That after EVERY date I can leave if I am treated poorly. Even if I commit I can leave every second. 3. Inner Child visualisation exercises! (In my feed) 4. making peace with my childhood and accepting the fact that it was dysfunctional. Not unloving, but dysfunctional. 5. having a close person who’s doing reality checks while I date (for me it’s my therapist) - ”Am I self sabotaging or is he really not fitting ?“ Tbh it’s a constant battle, dating is exhausting for me because I have lots of dynamics which fight against commitment. Fear and unconcious beliefs. Do you resonate ?? Or is it just me?🫠 My therapist always says don’t go with the facts, decide from your heart. How do you feel around him? So I ask you: How do you feel around them? Journal about it 💛🙏 Little disclaimer: sometimes your parents try their best to be there for you and raise you in a healthy way, so did mine, but life gets in the way.
