Panic underwater is one of the most underestimated dangers in diving. In seconds, fear can override training. In this case, a diver spat out her regulator at 15 meters, triggering a panic response. What followed wasn’t equipment failure, it was loss of breathing control. Ascending too quickly from 15 meters (≈50 ft) is dangerous and can be fatal, the ocean doesn’t forgive rushed decisions. How to reduce the risk: • Practice regulator recovery until it’s automatic • Slow your breathing, panic feeds on rapid breaths • Stop, signal, think, act • Dive within your limits and abort early if anxiety appears • Stay close to your buddy at all times Most diving fatalities aren’t caused by depth, they’re caused by panic. Key drills include practicing mask removal and replacement, flooding and clearing the mask, and handling an out-of-gas scenario by switching to an alternate air source and a traditional backup mask. Mastery of these procedures through practice is crucial for safe and proficient use of a full-face mask.  Donning and Doffing Donning: Loosen all straps, place your chin in the chin cup, pull the mask over your head, snug the lower straps first, then the middle, and finally the top strap. Ensure a comfortable but snug fit to prevent leaks before connecting the regulator. Doffing: Loosen the straps, then remove the mask.  Mask Clearing Partial Flood: Lean your head back, press at the top of the mask, and exhale through your nose to clear water. Full Flood: Flood the mask from the top by holding the purge button, then remove it and secure the strap around your hand. After replacing and adjusting it, clear it as you would a partially flooded mask.  Emergency Procedures Switching to backup: Practice swapping to a backup mask and regulator in a controlled manner. It's critical to keep the backup regulator accessible and purged before inhaling. Emergency ascent: If you must bail out of the full-face mask, breathe from your alternate air source while you remove the full-face mask and don your backup mask. After donning the backup mask, call the dive and proceed with the ascent. Redonning: To replace the full-face mask underwater, remove the backup mask, take a deep breath from the alternate air source, and then position the full-face mask.
