🧠 Executive Functioning 101 Think of it as your brain’s “control center” — helping you plan, organize, remember, regulate, and get things done. But when those skills are delayed or challenged? 💥 It’s not laziness. It’s not defiance. It’s a signal that support is needed — not shame. 📊 This infographic breaks down: ✅ What executive functioning skills are ⚠️ What the struggles look like 🛠️ And most importantly… the tools that help. ✨ Let’s support brains that think differently. Save this. Share it. Post it in your classroom or clinic. Every child deserves the tools that meet their brain’s needs. #ExecutiveFunctioning #NeurodivergentSupport #ThriveCommunityWorks #ADHDAwareness #BehaviorIsCommunication #EmotionalRegulation #ChildDevelopment #ToolsNotTantrums #InclusiveEducation #SupportDon’tShame #MentalHealthMatters

✨build executive function, but make it fun!✨ 1️⃣lay out an array of random objects - whatever you have around the house! 2️⃣encourage your child to study the items, creating a “mental picture” of what they see; for older children, you can also teach them other memory strategies to help them, such as remembering that they see 4 animals and 4 kitchen utensils, or they see 2 items of each color, etc. 3️⃣ask your child to close their eyes while you remove one item 4️⃣when they open their eyes, have them guess which item was removed 🌈You can make this task more/less challenging by varying different aspects such as: ☀️the number of objects ☀️the type of objects ☀️how much time you give them to create their mental picture 🌈Fun little games like this help engage your child and build executive functions like: ☀️working memory (holding information in their brain to notice differences before/after) ☀️attention (focusing on this task intensely, avoiding distraction) ☀️visualization (practice making a mental picture - not necessarily an executive function, but a great skill nonetheless!) ♥️Will you be trying this out with your child? #parentingadhd #adhdparent #adhdparenting #adhdtips #adhdhelp #adhdsupport #adhdbrain #adhders #adhdkids #executivefunction #executivefunctioning #executivefunctions #activitiesforkids #braingame #braingames

The researchers used MRI to measure cortical thickness in over 400 children. In typical development, the cortex (the brain’s outer layer) thickens during early childhood as we learn and create new connections, and then it thins out during adolescence as the brain "prunes" itself to become more efficient. The study found that children with ADHD follow the exact same pattern as their peers, but it happens on a delayed timeline. Key Insights from the Research The Prefrontal Delay: The most significant lag was found in the Prefrontal Cortex, the area responsible for executive functions like planning, focus, and impulse control. While typical children reached peak thickness in this area around 7.5, children with ADHD didn't reach that same milestone until age 10.5. The Sensory Head Start: Interestingly, the primary motor cortex, which drives physical movement, matures slightly earlier than in typical peers, there is a marked delay in the maturation of higher-order motor control regions (involved in motor planning). This reflects the excessive and poorly controlled motor activity we can see in kids with ADHD. This creates a "developmental mismatch." You have a motor system that is ready to go, while the "brakes" and control and planning (the prefrontal cortex) are lagging three years behind. Why This Matters for Parents This study provides biological proof that ADHD symptoms are a maturational delay. When a 10-year-old with ADHD struggles to organize their backpack or control an impulse, their prefrontal cortex may functionally be performing like that of a 7-year-old. They aren't "failing" to act their age; they are acting exactly the age their brain currently is. If this helped you reframe your child with more compassion, share this reel with a parent who needs it and follow for more science-backed knowledge and tools 🧠✨ #ADHD #executivefunction #children #parentingtips #emotionalregulation Shaw, Philip, et al. Why are ADHDers so clumsy? It’s not carelessness. ADHD impacts executive functions - including coordination, spatial awareness, and attention. 👉 Your brain is constantly jumping between stimuli, so your body can miss small details… like where the table actually is. How to reduce clumsiness with ADHD: • Slow down transitions (rushing = more accidents) • Keep spaces minimal (less objects = fewer collisions) • Use “pause before move” (1-second check before standing/walking) • Don’t multitask while moving (this is a big one) If this is you… you’re not broken. Your brain just works differently 💜 Follow us for more ADHD tips & comment ADHD and I’ll send you a free test. @unique_adhd @unique_adhd @unique_adhd #adhdawareness #adhd #adhdwomen #adhdproblems #adhdsupport

Albert Einstein wrote that the measure of intelligence is the ability to change. Contemporary neuroscience supports this view. Research in cognitive psychology shows that one of the strongest predictors of intelligence is cognitive flexibility — the capacity to abandon ineffective strategies, update one’s assumptions, and adapt behaviour to new information. Studies by Adele Diamond on executive functions demonstrate that cognitive flexibility is central to learning and problem-solving. Other research on cognitive shifting confirms that people with higher intelligence adjust their perspective more quickly and are less attached to initial beliefs when evidence changes. In practice, intelligence is not defined by how much we know, but by how effectively we can revise what we know. In a world that changes faster than ever, this ability has become a defining condition for acting wisely and responding adequately to complexity. Albert Einstein pisał, że miarą inteligencji jest zdolność do zmiany. Współczesna nauka potwierdza to wprost. #entuzjastkiworld #intelligence #change #cognitiveflexibility #neuroscience #psychology #leadership #learning #adaptability #mindset #transformation #growth #executivefunctions #complexity

Do you ever sit down to work, look up, and realize an hour disappeared? ⏱️ For many people, the issue isn’t laziness or lack of effort — it’s something called time blindness. That’s when your brain has trouble estimating how long things take or sensing the passage of time while you’re working. One simple tool I often recommend is an old-school visual timer. Put it right in front of you while you work. Seeing time move makes it more concrete, helps you pace yourself, and creates just enough urgency to keep your brain engaged. Sometimes the solution to executive functioning challenges isn’t working harder — it’s making time visible. 🧠 #ExecutiveFunctioning #TimeBlindness #ADHDeducation #FocusSkills #MentalHealthEducation #ProductivityTips

Building Executive Functions. These tips are especially helpful for students of all ages. By the way, I got the first 2 tips from my husband who is a tenured college professor. Tip 24: Read whatever it is your learning three times. 1st time: Read it through. 2nd time: Read for understanding while taking notes. 3rd time: Read & ask yourself critical thinking questions. Skills: Attention. Focus. Time management. Working Memory. Tip 25: For studying, spend 45 minutes daily studying the material. Read, review, take notes, do self-assessments (practice quizzes, create your own questions). Then, teach it to someone else. Skills: Motivation. Organization. Time management. Attention. Focus. Self-awareness. Problem-solving. Tip 26: Do you have a large amount of information to read? Break it down into smaller chunks. Example: Have 200 pages to read over 2 months? Read 10 pages per day Skills: Time management. Organization. Processing speed. Flexibility. Frustration Tolerance. Teaching your kids and teens executive function skills starts with you. Build healthy habits daily.
