Children with autism thrive on predictability. Setting fixed times for meals, play, therapy, and bedtime helps reduce anxiety and increase cooperation.
Example: A visual schedule for the day can guide transitions smoothly.
✅ Simplify Language
Using clear, concise, and consistent instructions reduces confusion and supports better understanding.
Example: Instead of saying “Can you please go and bring me your red shoes from the room?” say “Bring shoes.”
✅ Focus on Functional Skills
Prioritize teaching skills that promote independence in daily life.
Example: Practicing hand washing, using utensils, or dressing builds confidence and autonomy.
✅ Incorporate Interests
Motivation is key in learning.
Embedding a child’s interests makes teaching more engaging.

MA🎥 Did you know your child can receive ABA services through the school — not just privately?
Here’s the key: the school first needs to conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). The FBA helps determine why certain behaviors are happening and whether ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is necessary for your child to make progress.
If the FBA shows ABA is needed, it can — and should — be written into the IEP as part of your child’s supports and services.
📚 Knowledge is power. Don’t let “we don’t do ABA here” be the final answer.

ABThere’s a bit of an art to this ⤵️
Timing really matters! If you talk too much about a favorite memory too far BEFORE you start changing them, they might lose interest in hearing the rest.
But if you wait too long and start after challenging behavior, your child may think they are getting your attention for the challenging behavior.
The sweet spot? Start sharing just a little to spark their interest, make sure they’re motivated to hear the rest, and then begin changing their clothes while they’re engaged.
And here’s the thing…Avoid announcing “It’s time to get dressed!” and then bracing for the meltdown. Instead? Keep. It. Moving. Say what you need and then IMMEDIATELY start narrating.
It may sound small, but understanding motivation and timing makes a HUGE difference.
PS: This was also my go-to strategy for brushing teeth and diaper changes.
In my Practical Parenting course, I created a module to help with everyday routines that parents often struggle with.
We go over ways to make your daily routines easier such as:
✨ Screentime struggles
✨ Brushing teeth battles
✨ Food throwing at the table
✨ Cleaning up without a fight
✨ Transitioning to ned
✨ Bath battles
✨ Staying in bed
✨ Setting expectations and boundaries so your child actually follows them.
