HAThe consequences of reckless or impaired driving reach far beyond the crash. Families who lose loved ones are left to carry unimaginable grief, their lives forever changed by one person’s poor decision.
@trinitycampogan was 10 years old in November 2019 when she lost her mom in a head-on crash on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway caused by an impaired and distracted driver.
Trinity was injured in the crash, and her sister and a family friend, both 15 at the time, were severely injured and medevaced to an O‘ahu hospital in critical condition.
Now 16, Trinity is sharing her story in hopes of preventing other families from experiencing the same heartbreak.
This crash also had a lasting impact on our department. At the time, tourniquets were not standard-issue equipment. Officer Patrick Robison, one of the responding officers, had proactively purchased his own tourniquet after specialized training and used it to save the leg of the family friend.
In 2020, Officer Robison received the Bronze Medal of Merit for his life-saving actions, and this crash helped lead to tourniquets becoming standard issue for all sworn personnel.
Five other officers received Certificates of Merit for their quick actions aiding the crash victims, including Officer Adam Hanes.
During yesterday’s Traffic Safety Vigil, Officer Hanes and Trinity were reunited for the first time since the crash — an emotional moment for them both.
