It depends on my weight loss or gain, time of the month, water retention, muscle change, swelling, etc. Many amputees need new sockets for many different reasons, the first reason being that it’s old and was used too much, aka time for an update 😉 I’m so grateful to live in Canada 🇨🇦 because we have programs that help us cover the costs of prosthetic limbs. Did you know that one of my legs costs $15,000? 🤯 Here is a step by step video how my prosthetist takes a casting of my residual limb to make me a proper fitting socket 🥰 A fitted socket is soooo important. Saying goodbye to it can come with more emotion than you expect, and it’s ok to grieve that. ⭐️After surgery, the shape of the socket changes as the surgical wounds settle — and it may continue to change over the years. Over time, I got used to how things looked and became more at ease with the reflection looking back. ⭐️You adapt in small but important ways — like how makeup sits, how your socket feels during the day, or how you manage comfort in different environments. It all becomes more familiar with time. ⭐️Prosthetics aren’t identical copies — but they are designed with you in mind. You can often choose details like iris design, colours, or visible markings depending on what feels right for you. Some people prefer a more natural match, others don’t — there’s no right way. A good prosthetic should fit comfortably and may need adjusting or replacing over time. That’s completely normal. ⭐️Sensation still exists in the socket. I can feel blinking, pressure, and even something as small as an eyelash getting behind the prosthetic. ⭐️Some people will notice. A lot of people won’t. Some will find it genuinely interesting. And the right people? They won’t be phased. They’ll stay, support you, and see you for everything you are. This isn’t everything, but these are some of the things I wish I could go back and tell myself before surgery.
