If you’re presented with a Settlement Agreement (VSO), remember this: the goal is usually to end your contract as quickly and cheaply as possible. Signing right away can cost you a significant amount in severance pay or even your right to unemployment benefits. Before you sign, keep this in mind: 1️⃣ Negotiation is often possible Not always, but frequently. Severance pay, transition payment, end date, non-compete clauses. All of these can be negotiable, depending on the situation. 2️⃣ Legal budget Sometimes employers offer a legal budget (typically €500–€1,500) so you can have a lawyer review the agreement. No budget? Sometimes a lawyer can negotiate reimbursement of legal costs. No guarantees, but it happens. Be aware: this budget is often only paid if you actually sign in the end. Exceptions apply if you’re covered by legal insurance or a union. 3️⃣ You have a reflection period Even if you agreed or signed under pressure, you usually have 14 days to withdraw. If the reflection period isn’t included in the VSO, it extends to 21 days. I’ll explain this in more detail in another video. Bottom line: Get legal advice first.
