Raising baby chicks doesn’t have to be hard or expensive! 🐣
I've found a brooder setup that I'm very excited to try out and share my experiences with, and it’s so simple, using a puppy play pen from Kmart. I really love Kmart lol.
Here’s why I think it will works so well.
First of all its going to be easy to clean.
The open design makes it super easy to wipe down and change bedding. No more tricky corners or heavy lifting.
It's super light and easy to move around.
Need to move it outside for sunshine or closer to the heat lamp? No problem! This playpen folds up and is super light, so you can carry it and move it anywhere.
The XL size is big enough for plenty of chicks to run, jump, and flap their wings and even do ZOOMIES!! It keeps them happy and healthy as they grow.
The sturdy sides keep your chicks safe and secure while letting air in. You can even watch them play without opening it up.
Its very customisable, you can add everything the babies need! A heat lamp, food and water, and even little perches for them to practice roosting.
Now that I think about it, I'll need to make another trip down to Kmart to have a scout around for some perches!
By putting puppy pee pads down it will not only help to soak up all the mess and make cleanup even faster, it will help give the little babes a non slip surface to help with their footing.
This setup is so easy, and your chicks will love it!

If you’re thinking about getting chicks, here’s a breakdown of what I spent on my budget-friendly brooder setup! Keep in mind, costs can vary based on the supplies you choose and the number of chicks you’re raising. I have six, and this setup worked great for me!

✅ DIY Brooder (Large storage bin & hardware cloth) – $20
✅ Brooder Heater – $43

♻️ Recurring costs:
🛏️ Bedding (Hemp, 10 lbs) – $25

5RThe chicks have all made it to two weeks old which is when I always breathe a sigh of relief! No more worrying about pasty butt or the risk of failure to thrive. But that doesn’t mean the job of tending to your chicks is any less important now than in the first two weeks. Here are my Do’s & Dont’s to keep your chicks thriving!

DO monitor temperature inside the brooder and be sure to raise the heat source each week. You may need to raise and lower it daily as we get warmer days but still have cool nights.
DO check feed and water multiple times a day to remove any 💩 and bedding the chicks have thrown into it.
DO sprinkle chick grit on top of their feed to prepare them for digesting greens and other treats.
DO offer their starter feed in your hand daily to get them accustomed to you.
DO pick them up by placing your hand below them not by reaching down from above.
DO clean the brooder often and remove any wet bedding promptly.

DON’T start feeding treats too early. Chick starter has all the nutrition they need.
DON’T forget to keep a screen over the top of the brooder to prevent early high flyers from escaping.
DON’T worry if your chicks are scared of the hand 🖐️ coming into the brooder. With time, and as they realize it’s often holding food and eventually treats, they will get more and more accustomed to you.
DON’T let it get too crowded in the brooder as the chicks grow because that can lead to boredom and negative pecking behaviors. Chicks will be ready for more space / larger accommodations by the time they are a few weeks old.

My chicks will be moving out of the brooder in about a week when I’ll let them have the secure run that is attached to our coop. I’ll keep two heat lamps on to make sure they have enough warmth as well still be having lows in the 40’s. I’m excited to have them in the bigger space soon because that makes it much easier to bond with them and lap chicken training can commence in earnest!

FLSetting up a chick brooder before bringing home baby chicks
If you’re raising chicks for the first time, your brooder setup matters. In this video I’m using a pop-up puppy play pen, Dominion Hemp bedding, a brooder plate instead of a heat lamp, high-protein chick crumble, and NutriDrench in their water for the first few days.
A safe, clean, low-dust brooder with proper heat, food, and water placement makes a huge difference in chick health and stress levels.

A big cardboard box works just fine for a brooder. We used a box and then a pack n play at first 😂 and guess what? It worked!

HE🐣 Chick Brooder Setup: Everything You Need Before Hatch Day 🐣
We are still waiting on a few more eggs to hatch, but it’s time to get our brooder setup!
BROODER
I have used everything from mesh brooders to large totes. You can use anything with enough space for chicks to move away from heat.
HEAT SOURCE
I love this brooder plate from @chickcozy_ because it makes controlling the temperature nice and simple.
Start at 95°F week 1 and decrease 5° each week.
💡 Pro tip: Heat lamps can be a fire risk, so brooder plates are a much safer option.
BEDDING
Nothing can beat hemp shavings. We love our @grubblyfarms hemp shavings because they are dust free, more absorbent than other bedding options, and great at controlling odors. Hemp bedding allows me to go longer in between brooder cleans.
Avoid cedar, newspaper, or slippery surfaces (can cause splay leg).
WATER
Shallow, chick-safe waterer to prevent drowning.
Add marbles/pebbles for the first few days if needed.
I also like to add electrolytes to an additional watered, especially if I’ve had chicks shipped.
CHICK STARTER FEED
Chicks need a high protein starter feed for up to the first 18 weeks of their life. Chicks will double their weight in the first week of life and continue to grow at a rapid rate, so they need proper nutrition to maintain healthy growth.

HI1️⃣The brooder might not always be in use, but there’s no more baby chicks in my house & that’s a huge win😆 I use the @chickcozy_ heater in my brooder, the temp can be regulated much easier than a light bulb.
2️⃣ The poop shelf with @premiumchickensand has been life changing! I have been cleaning it daily instead of the dreadful once a month big clean out in my old coop. It’s so easy to scoop it and chuck it! The sand is essentially dust free & doesn’t hold onto any odor! Chicken poop scoop from @bee.jeweled.coop
3️⃣ An automatic chicken door is a must! I got mine from @chickcozy_ . I have it set Sun up to sun down. It keeps my chickens safe at night from the wildlife & makes my life easier in the morning so I don’t have to let them all out of the coop!

Setting up a chick brooder doesn’t have to break the bank!
This little setup is made with a Walmart plastic tote, a Sweeter Heater, a piece of scrap wood, plus a simple waterer and feeder and that’s really all your babies need to start off strong.
🐣🏠 A clean tote, pine shavings, safe heat, and fresh water will keep your chicks warm, dry, and thriving. You can always upgrade later, but for those first few weeks, simple is perfect.
🐣🌱 If you’re raising Silkies, Cochins, or any backyard chickens, this type of brooder is budget friendly, beginner friendly, and super easy to clean.
