The history of frustrating user interfaces is nearly as old as computing itself. In the early days of programming, user interfaces were designed by developers, for developers - think blinking green cursors on monochrome terminals in the 1960s. Usability wasn’t a concern, because the average user was a computer scientist. As personal computers spread in the 1980s and 1990s, GUI (graphical user interface) design exploded. Did you know Xerox was one of the biggest innovators in early computers? The Xerox Alto, developed in 1973, is widely recognized as one the first true personal computers and incorporated several features now standard in modern PCs. Its most notable innovations include the graphical user interface (GUI), which allowed users to interact with the computer through graphical icons instead of text commands. The Alto was also among the first to use a mouse, and Ethernet networking, which were groundbreaking at the time.
