For runners, for everyday athletes… and yes, that means YOU. You actually loose power faster than strength as you age, so it’s important keep the hops going :) that's why in the Commit App we touch on all areas to keep you moving well and feeling good. ✅ Improve running efficiency aka train your muscles and tendons to store and release energy efficiently with each stride as you run, conserving energy and returning it as propulsive force. ✅ Reduced injury risk by strengthen tendons, ligaments, bones… making them more resilient to repetitive impact forces. ✅ Improve neuromuscular coordination by challenge the neuromuscular system by incorporating dynamic, high energy movements that require rapid force generation. ✅ Improved power & speed by muscle fiber recruitment and reaction speed, they help give you a stronger stride and help you sustain higher speeds for longer periods. As with many things in training, people complicate plyometrics. But a lot of great programs are built on simple jumps. In place jumps, bounds, hops, skips. The tool isn’t the point….the classification is. Extensive contacts build tolerance. Higher volume, lower intensity. Think pogo hops, rolling hops, power-speed drills Intensive jumps push force/reactivity. Lower volume, higher output. Think depth jumps, hurdle hops, single leg bounds Once you understand that difference, exercise selection gets a lot easier. You stop chasing the most impressive drill and start asking better questions. Where is the athlete in the training year? What can they recover from? What’s already in the program? That’s the framework behind Project Speed. It combines Speed Kills and The Art & Science of Sport Preparation and shows how sprinting, plyometrics, strength work, and conditioning actually fit together in a real program. Jumping can be great for adding impact to your routine and giving your bones that mechanical stimulus to remodel and get stronger. How much ground reaction force do you need? 3-4 times your bodyweight is the suggested threshold for increasing BMD but any weight bearing exercise is better than being sedentary. There are some non jumping options in this video so don’t worry if you can’t jump, add weight to the step ups (over 30cm) and you’ll increase the stimulus even further. Impact isn’t right for everyone so check with your healthcare provider especially if you have osteoporosis or have suffered a fracture before. Begin with at least a month of strength and power training first, preparing joints, getting neuromuscular adaptations and training your ability to land safely. Aim for 10 impacts x 3-5 sets per session and 2 mins rest between sets. It’s important to leave at least 24 hours between sessions as a reset period so your bones stay sensitive to the impact stimulus.
