JALet’s clear something up…
Being assertive is not the same as being aggressive.
Assertiveness is:
– Speaking up with clarity
– Addressing issues directly
– Setting boundaries without apology
– Asking questions that move things forward
Aggressiveness is:
– Disrespect
– Intimidation
– Attacking people instead of addressing problems
The problem?
When you become assertive, you start disrupting systems that rely on silence, avoidance, or people “just dealing with it.”
So what happens?
You raise a concern…
You point out a gap…
You question a decision…
And instead of engaging with what you said, some people default to labeling your delivery as “aggressive.”
Not because it is.
But because it’s uncomfortable.
Because now they have to:
– Explain decisions
– Defend processes
– Confront inefficiencies
– Or admit something was missed
And that’s where the shift happens.
People who were fine when you stayed quiet may suddenly have a problem when you start speaking up.
Not because your tone changed.
But because your presence did.
Assertiveness requires:
– Self-respect
– Awareness
– The willingness to be misunderstood
Aggressiveness requires none of that—it just creates conflict.
So if you’re:
✔️ Communicating respectfully
✔️ Staying solution-oriented
✔️ Addressing issues directly
Then what you’re doing isn’t aggression.
It’s clarity.
And clarity has a way of exposing what silence used to cover.
Not everyone will like that.
But that doesn’t make it wrong.
It just means you’re no longer participating in avoidance.
And for some people… that’s the first time they’ve had to deal with it.

RO💫What does it mean to be assertive in your relationships?
✨Being assertive means being confident in who you are and clear in what you want and what you want to say.
✨To be assertive doesn’t mean you impose your opinion or aggressively tell others what to do.
✨It also doesn’t
mean being passive and avoidant, afraid to express your voice, your thoughts, and your point of view. (Sometimes, you might do that to avoid conflict or maybe because you don’t want others to dislike you, but later, you feel upset and resentful for not saying something).
✨By being assertive, you can positively and calmly express yourself with clear and honest intentions. You are also open to communicating, ready, and willing to listen to what the other person has to say.
✨It’s a win-win dialogue.
✨This way, you and the other person are not upset or resentful, and you both feel seen, heard, and validated.
✨It may not be easy at first. Try to understand yourself and your fears.
✨Awareness is the first step, and then you can find different resources to help you to be more assertive such as reading books, getting coaching, or any other resources available to you. With preparation and consistent practice you’ll get better and better each time. 💫

A child that is assertive for their own opinion and feelings is less taken advantage of, less compliant for incorrect/ unhealthy directions AND they live with a strong sense of purpose.
That does mean that, at times, they WON’T blindly obey
you.
They will ask you “Why” and why not” as my girls ask me everyday🤦♀️
However, that is great practice for learning things like healthy boundaries, strong communication and natural consequences.
It comes in the preteen and teen age so brave up.
