But a few special vectors behave differently — they only stretch or shrink without changing direction. These special vectors are called eigenvectors, and the scaling factor is called the eigenvalue. In this visual reel, we start with a simple 2×2 matrix and explore the equation A x = λ x, which means that after applying the matrix A, the vector x stays on the same line, scaled by λ. By constructing the characteristic equation and solving it step by step, we find the eigenvalues and then compute their corresponding eigenvectors. Finally, we move from algebra to geometry. On the coordinate grid, you will see how ordinary vectors rotate and distort under a linear transformation, while eigenvectors keep their direction perfectly. This geometric behavior explains why eigenvalues and eigenvectors appear everywhere — from computer graphics and physics to data science, machine learning, vibration analysis, and differential equations.
