That is a lot to be going on in one young brain. 🌟Curious in learning more? Comment LEARN for a link to my webinar on Asynchronous Development🌟 🧠Asynchronous development is a hallmark of giftedness. It is the idea that the brain does not develop at the same time. This is proven through neuroscience, yet with gifted brains the discord between different areas of development can be huge. 😵‍💫Essentially, you have one child, teenager, or adult who is constantly being pulled in different directions. ➡️The result? Frustration. ❤️Internal Frustration I see huge frustration in my young students between their cognitive ability and performance abilities. They have these huge, complex ideas but struggle to communicate them. ❤️External Frustration I also see educators and parents struggle to understand why the child who can so eloquently argue for the preservation of sea turtles also has an emotional meltdown when the timer goes off and they need to stop an activity. The only way to support Asynchronous Development is by first acknowledging it. It's amazing how much can change when you finally have a reason behind some behaviors. 📣I'd love to hear about your experience with Asynchronous Development! Asynchronous Development has entered the chat... Welcome to one of the KEY elements of giftedness: Asynchronous Development. This mouthful refers to the idea that gifted brains don't develop evenly - and it makes sense, because what brains do?! However, the difference is more pronounced with gifted brains, which is why The Columbus Group added it to their definition of giftedness in the 90s. Imagine being a kid who can... 🤔cognitively grasp topics like a 14-year-old ❤️emotionally handle situations like a 4-year-old 🦖be interested in topics of an 8-year-old ...pretty confusing, right? In academics we see this play out a lot in reading/writing. Typically, reading skills are learned spontaneously while there's a struggle to get those big ideas out on paper. So what can you do? 🌟Scaffold🌟 This means providing the necessary support to help your child get to a place where they can succeed. We often don't think of scaffolding gifted kids - "they're gifted, they'll be fine!" - but in reality the gap can be so large that they need support! 🌟Teach Vocabulary🌟 For help with emotional regulation, make sure to capitalize on the gifted brain's tendency toward nuanced vocabulary by teaching the exact words to describe feelings. 🌟Breathe🌟 When we hear a child talking like a mini-adult, it can be easy to forget they are still a child (or even behind developmentally!) So when they struggle to tie their shoes or have a tantrum it seems especially out of character. Reminding yourself that they're not doing this intentionally can go a long way. 📢 What are ways you've experienced asynchronous development with your kids or students? #giftededucation #parenting #emotionalregulation #emotionaldysregulation #gifteded #giftedkids #giftedchild #giftedchildren #giftedandtalented #gifted #education #giftedteacher #development #emotionalintelligence #emotionalhealth

A hallmark quality of 2E children is asynchronous development. There are multiple parts of them that are growing at different rates as a result of being both gifted and disabled. A child who is gifted with ADHD may go totally unnoticed because their struggles with executive functioning hide their advanced knowledge and abilities. This means that their needs as both a gifted kid and an ADHDer go unmet, which can cause a lot of problems as they get older. Twice-exceptional people deserve to be given the tools and support to navigate the world as a neurodivergent person. They deserve to know that they aren’t “wrong” but different, and that is okay. . As a gifted teacher, I hear misconceptions ALL THE TIME. I work hard to change old thinking about giftedness, but this is one hill I will die on! Let’s go through these misconceptions… 1. They must be good at math - sure, some gifted kids do have strengths in math! But not all. There are many areas of giftedness that show up in many different ways. 2. They must get pulled out of class- actually, most giftedness programs models are no longer solely rely on pulling students out of class. My district uses co-planning/co-teaching model, so I am IN their classes almost every day of the week. I love this model and will share more on it later! 3. They are so mature- many gifted individuals can have something called asynchronous development. At times, social emotional maturity and growth can develop at a different rate than academic abilities (faster or slower!) 4. Gifted individuals can’t have a disability- it is VERY possible to be both gifted and have a disability. They can co exist and we can and SHOULD support all facets of an individual. A disability does NOT hinder an individual from learning how to use their strengths. When an individual has both giftedness and a disability, this is called twice exceptionality. What gifted misconceptions absolutely grind your gears?! Drop them below! #gifted #giftedandtalented #giftededucationprogram #giftedadvocacy #giftedmisconceptions

What the heck is asynchronous development? 👉🏻It means that kids don’t develop at the same pace in all areas. It’s a term used frequently when educators, therapists, and other professionals are talking about gifted kids. ⭐️Gifted kids often develop unevenly across different types of skills. In particular, this can be true when we compare intellectual, physical, and emotional development. It can also be true that a gifted child is accelerated in some areas of learning and not in others. ❗️Being gifted is not synonymous with being high achieving, despite the fact that most school-based G&T programs are really high achiever programs. (More on that distinction in another reel, I promise.) ❤️share this post with a mama of a gifted child. #gifted #asynchronousdevelopment #giftedness #giftedandtalented #socialemotionaldevelopment #executivefunction #acceleratedlearning #profoundlygifted #neurodiversity #giftedparenting #giftedlearners #raisingtinyhumans

🙉 I’ve been hearing it more and more from parents lately - kids are studying for the gifted test, some starting as young as Grade 1 (age 6) So let’s talk about it. Why is this happening, how are families doing it, and is it really worth it? The why usually comes down to wanting smaller classes, more challenge, and the chance at programs that feel like a golden ticket in a crowded public system. For some parents, it is also about opening doors. They see gifted identification as a way to get their child what they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. The how ranges from practice booklets and online resources to tutors and prep programs. Families worry their child might be overlooked, so they prep to give them an edge. But here is what parents often don’t realize. Many families are misinformed about what the gifted program actually is. Even if your child qualifies as gifted, it does not mean it is the best environment for them. For some children it can actually create a social mismatch. Most children in gifted programs are what we call “twice exceptional.” They may have areas of significant strength, but also areas of struggle that need support. That is very different than the picture most parents have in mind. And this is key. People hear “gifted” and think it just means bright. That is not even scratching the surface of a true gifted profile. Giftedness can show up as intensity, emotional sensitivity, asynchronous development, or even challenging behaviours. It is not simply a higher IQ or advanced academics. So is prepping really worth it? Gifted testing is designed to measure natural ability, not what has been practiced. Prepping too heavily can create a mismatch. A child may get into a program that is not the right fit, and that can be just as challenging as not getting in at all. Instead of asking “how do I get my child into gifted?” shift the question to “what environment does my child truly need to thrive?” Sometimes that answer is gifted, but sometimes it isn’t. What’s your take: to study or not to study? Every year, we help over one thousand families to navigate their kids journey to school. We’d love to support you, too ❤️

Brilliant at astrophysics, but struggles to find their shoes? 🚀👟 Welcome to the world of the Twice Exceptional (2e) child. If your child can explain the complexities of the universe but “forgets” a three-step instruction to clean their room, you aren’t alone—and they aren’t being lazy. This is the 2e Paradox: High cognitive ability (Gifted) + Neurodivergent challenges (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia). It’s a brain that’s “asynchronous.” They are developing at different speeds in different areas. The goal isn’t to “level them out”—it’s to celebrate the spark while scaffolding the struggles. When we stop labeling the gap as “laziness” and start seeing it as “wiring,” everything changes. 2e kids are some of the most extraordinary thinkers on the planet. They just need a world that understands their map. 🌍❤️ Hit SHARE to help more people understand the 2e profile! ↗️ What is your child’s “2e Superpower” and their “Daily Struggle”? Giftedness isn't just being "smart" or "ahead." It's a different way of thinking and viewing the world, and it comes with its own set of blessings and struggles. While academic concepts may come more easily to gifted kids, many are twice-exceptional, meaning their strengths are paired with areas of deeper struggle where they need additional support. As parents, it can be overwhelming to consider how to challenge your gifted kids as they move forward quickly in some areas but not others. We're excited to bring you this conversation with Erin Vanek, all about understanding and supporting gifted kids, asynchronous development, building frustration tolerance, and more! “He talks like a little adult!” “She’s so advanced for her age.” And then five minutes later… total meltdown because the red cup is in the dishwasher. Welcome to asynchronous development—the hallmark of many gifted kids. It means their intellectual abilities are outpacing their emotional, social, or even physical development. So yes, they might explain Newton’s laws of motion… and also hide under the table because someone looked at them funny. This mismatch can confuse adults. Teachers expect consistent behavior. Parents wonder why their child is solving algebra but can’t tie their shoes without weeping. Here’s what helps: 1) Remind yourself (often): emotional maturity ≠ IQ score. 2) Use emotional language early and often—teach them to name what they feel. 3) Set realistic expectations. Their brain might be older than their body, but bedtime is still 8:00. Also, don’t be surprised if they panic about global warming and then need a nightlight shaped like a narwhal. Both are real. Both matter. Your child is living multiple developmental timelines at once. It’s not broken—it’s just… complex. And yeah, kind of exhausting. But also kind of beautiful.
