To be honest with you, when I started riding I thought that getting a horse into a “frame” meant using my hands. Coaches would tell me to “take more contact” or “keep my hands steady,” but no one really explained what actually creates true connection… So I kept trying to fix it with my reins. But the more I did, the more resistance I got. My horse felt heavy in my hands, sometimes hollow, sometimes overbent—but never truly through and engaged. It wasn’t until I changed my approach that everything clicked. The truth? A horse won’t come on the bit from your hands alone. Here’s what actually works: ✔️ Your seat and legs create energy – The hindquarters must step under first. ✔️ Your hands receive, not pull – Connection should feel elastic, not restrictive. ✔️ It starts from the back to the front – The shape happens because of correct riding, not because you put the horse’s head there. Once I stopped focusing on my hands and started riding from seat to hand, my horse felt lighter, more supple, and truly connected. SteadyHands Gloves helped me become aware of just how much I was doing with my hands. They encourage softer, steadier contact, so instead of micromanaging with the reins, you can focus on engaging your seat, core, and legs—the real keys to true connection. If this is something you’ve struggled with, let me know in the comments! ⬇️ #horseridingtips #horserider #dressagerider #equestrianblog #flatwork #dressage

Flatwork is the base of all the good jumping 😉 We like to work a lot on basic exercises like leg yielding, transitions(more transitions), tempo changes. All these exercises help us in the jumping ring, they help the horse to be more soft in the hand and responsive to the leg. How to ride a 10/10 canter in your dressage test? Read below for 4 tips to get it right ⬇️ 1. Time your transition Ask for canter as the outside hind leg hits the ground, that’s the first beat of the canter. 2. Know your aids ✅ Inside leg at the girth: encourages inside hind under ✅ Outside leg behind the girth: signals canter aid ✅ Inside rein: gentle flexion ✅ Outside rein: balances the frame ✅ Inside seat bone: adds energy + direction 3. Use corners and circles for support Especially for young horses, ask for canter in a corner or on a circle. This naturally supports the correct lead and balance. 4. Stay still, but not stiff Let your hips move with the canter rhythm, but keep your upper body still and tall. Have any other tips? Share with us in the comments! . #ValentineEquine #dressage #dressagetips

The following lateral exercises one may find useful to incorporate into their schooling program for their hunter or jumper. Their purpose for the jumping sport in general is to improve lateral agility and responsiveness to the lateral aids. Prior to teaching these exercises, the horse should be proficient at turning on the forehand, turning on the haunch, and my two staple exercises—leg yield and shoulder-fore. Striving for perfection or complete precision as required in the dressage sport is not necessary for the hunter or jumper. These exercises are described and performed in detail in my “Controls of the Horse, Part Two: Leg Aids” lesson, and are only briefly touched upon here. 99% RIDERS DESTROY COLLECTION BEFORE IT EVEN BEGINS… Why? Because they think collection = more muscle, stronger aids, or alternating “go & stop” aids. From a biomechanics perspective, this is the biggest misconception in dressage. Collection is not about muscle power. It is about tendon activation and changing the vector of movement: ➡️ In normal movement, the force vector is horizontal: the horse pushes forward, relying on momentum. ⬆️ In collection, the vector shifts upward: the horse begins to carry himself. Modern sports science proves that power and suspension do not come from maximal muscle contraction, but from relaxation & tendon activation. Tendons, when activated, act like springs — storing and releasing energy for movement in a way far more efficient than muscle. Once a horse learns to activate this system, then suspension, elevation, and gradually collection becomes not only inevitable but truly EFFORTLESS ✨ In my recent ride with my young horse Million (who learns this system) you can see the exact progression & experience it step-by-step with me & my horse: 1️⃣ From forward, swingy trot developed through relaxation. Make sure that forwardness arises from the horse’s own self-sufficient movement, not rider’s activation. 2️⃣ To frame lengthening to connect forehand and hindquarters, allowing the spine to transmit force freely from the hind legs. 3️⃣ And a subtle redirection of energy at the withers, transforming the horizontal vector into a vertical one without mechanical lifting (for this to work the spine must be connected and tendons already activated!) This progression produces the first authentic moments of suspension. These are not created artificially but emerge naturally as the horse begins to coordinate his musculoskeletal system to include tendon elasticity. From here, the pathway to collection gets to be FULL OF JOY OF MOVEMENT & EMOTIONAL EASE 💆🏼‍♀️ 🔗 Comment SWING&BOUNCE and I’ll send you the full training session with Milion 🎬🎥🍿🤫 #onehorselife #dressagehorse #equinebiomechanics #collectiontraining #horsetraining #dressagerider #paardensport #horsewellness #horsetraining #dressagetraining

🇬🇧 Some of my favourite flatwork patterns and why: 1. The classic figure 8- this helps me to feel which side of the horse needs more work, as it offers a direct comparison. It also incorporates both bending and straight lines, which also shows me where our focus should lie. 2. The serpentine with 3 turns- while not as complex as 4 turns, it highlights where communication may be lacking between me and the horse. Miss one turn and you won’t complete it correctly, once again highlighting where work needs to happen. 3. The ice cream cone- this tight turn allows me to access if the horse is adequately bending and flexible, while not too flexible as to make the turn too short. 4. The centreline diversion- I use this for horses that get bored by work and try to anticipate the rider instead of actually responding to the aids. This way it allows me to introduce something new and keep the horse alert. Of course all of these should be done on both sides! 🇳🇱 in the comments 😁 #equestrian #training #equestrianexercises #horsetraining #horseriding
