Does this sound like your kiddo? If these behaviors show up frequently and across different environments, they may point to underlying sensory processing differences. Let’s take a closer look 👇🏻 🩹Overreacting to minor cuts or bumps: often linked to tactile sensitivity and/or differences in interoceptive processing. The nervous system may interpret light touch or minor injury as more intense or threatening than it is. 🍔Never hungry: this can point to low interoceptive awareness. They may not easily recognize internal cues like hunger, so they don’t initiate eating or may seem indifferent to food. These kids often need external structure around meals. 🌮Constantly hungry: also related to interoception differences. This is often a sign that they have a high interoceptive awareness meaning they’ll get full very quickly and feel hunger quickly, too. 🚽Inconsistent awareness of bathroom needs (either constantly feeling like they have to go or not noticing until it’s urgent): this also reflects interoceptive processing challenges. Some kids are hypersensitive to internal sensations and feel urgency quickly, while others under-register and don’t notice until the last minute or at all. 😩Big reactions to seemingly small things: often tied to poor interoceptive awareness and sensory overload. If a child has difficulty understanding their internal states (like rising frustration or discomfort), emotions can build up quickly and feel overwhelming. For more sensitive kiddos, a nervous system that’s already overloaded makes it much harder to tolerate even small triggers. There is unfortunately lots of pseudoscience that pops up in the mental health world, but common examples specific for OCD treatment involve thought stopping methods and talk therapy. Both techniques have been found to actually worsen OCD symptoms rather than alleviate them. . How often do you notice your heart beating in your chest, or the pace of your breathing?⁠ ⁠ Odds are, it’s not something you take notice of on a daily basis — at least not until someone asks you to bring your attention to it like we are now. But when you are zeroing in on these things — the subtle rise and fall of your chest with each breath, the low grumble in your stomach signaling it’s time to eat — you become more connected to your awareness, or lack thereof.⁠ ⁠ How acutely can you feel these things when you’re focusing on them? That ability to tap into what’s happening inside of the body, and listen to and understand what’s happening beneath the surface, is interoception. When you call your awareness to these things that are usually happening in the background, you’re practicing interoception.⁠ ⁠ Tune into our May Monthly Dose with Valerie Knopik to learn more about this practice that research suggests may be very important for our physical and mental health and wellbeing.⁠

But do you know WHY this happens? ✨low interoceptive awareness ✨ This is common in people with chronic migraine (also people with adhd and autism 🧐), and essentially blunts your ability to sense and respond to your body’s cues. This means you won’t pick up on attack until it’s way too late, which is super unhelpful on its own. But this ALSO means that you’re less likely to realize when you’re hungry, thirsty, tired, overstimulated, or stressed until things have gotten BAD. Allll of this circles back around to make your migraine even harder to control! 😩 ➡️ Want to work on improving your interoceptive awareness? Try taking a few moments each day to close your eyes, take some deep breaths, and FEEL. Feel what’s happening in your body (and your mind) and try not to make any judgements on it. Then take action if anything stands out as needing attention. I know I'm not alone in finding it hard to do something just for myself, to chase that elusive dopamine. 🤷‍♀️ Can you relate? Processing emotions isn't always straightforward for me, as a Neurodivergent individual. But you know what? Yoga is an incredible tool for getting in touch with your senses. Hugo Critchley published research in 2004 measuring something most people assume everyone can do equally. Sense their own body. He tested interoceptive awareness: the ability to detect internal body states. Heartbeat. Breath. Hunger. Pain. Tension. And found massive variation. Some people could accurately count their heartbeats without taking their pulse. Others couldn’t sense their heart at all. Trauma survivors consistently showed the lowest interoceptive accuracy. A somatic therapist I spoke with described clients who couldn’t tell if they were hungry or anxious. Tired or sad. The internal signals had become indistinguishable. Not because they weren’t paying attention. Because their nervous systems had learned to suppress internal awareness. The mechanism is protective: when your internal state is chronically overwhelming (fear, pain, rage, grief), your system learns to dampen the signals. Dissociation from the body becomes a survival strategy. You stop feeling. Because feeling was unbearable. You’re not out of touch with yourself. Your nervous system learned to ignore internal signals for survival. Most people experiencing this are told to “listen to their body.” But you can’t listen to signals your system has spent years learning to suppress. Recovery requires gradually building tolerance for internal sensation. Not forcing awareness. On February 15th, we’re creating space for this kind of shift.
