In the Indus Valley civilization around 2600 BCE, some of the earliest true toilets existed. Homes had brick-built toilet rooms connected to covered drains. Waste was flushed with water and carried through underground sewer systems into cesspits or waterways. This was one of the most advanced sanitation systems of the ancient world. In ancient Rome, public toilets were common. These were long stone benches with holes cut into them, used by many people at once. Running water flowed beneath the seats, carrying waste into massive sewer systems. There was no privacy, and toilet use was a social activity. Instead of toilet paper, Romans used a shared sponge on a stick, rinsed in water between uses. In ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, toilets were simpler. Wealthy households used stone or wooden seats placed over clay pots or pits, which servants emptied. In some areas, waste drained into streets or nearby canals. During the medieval period in Europe, castles used garderobes. These were small rooms built into outer walls, where waste dropped directly into moats or pits below. In cities, most people relied on chamber pots, which were emptied into streets or cesspools, often leading to terrible sanitation.
