Bats and dolphins echolocate to navigate the skies and the seas. It turns out that humans can echolocate, too—and it could change your brain. This study’s 10-week echolocation training program (20 sessions, 2-3 hours each) taught participants how to use click-based echolocation to perform perception, identification, and navigation tasks. Have you ever wondered how echolocation works?🔊 Echolocation or biosonar, is a biological process used by certain animals, including the sperm whale, to navigate and locate objects in their environment when vision is ineffective, for example at night or in turbid water. It involves the production of sound and the reception and interpretation, using their brain, of the echoes which return from objects. The term “echolocation” was coined in 1944 by Donald Griffin, to describe how bats orient themselves in darkness, and CETI’s principal advisor Roger Payne was actually a research assistant to Donald while @Harvard University studying bat echolocation before he dedicated his career to the study of whales and their protection. The echolocation systems of bats and toothed whales, like sperm whales, are exquisitely sophisticated and it is an example of convergent evolution, the process by which distantly related organisms evolve similar features or adaptations.🐋🦇 To learn more about the echolocation of sperm whales and bats check out the papers, “Blind as a Bat? Daniel Kish is a visionary who lost his sight but found a way to see the world with sound – through echolocation. Now, the President and founder of World Access for the Blind extends his skills to people with visual impairment, teaching them to use echolocation for enhanced navigation and independence. He has taught this skill to over 500 blind children around the world. #echolocation #navigation #accessibility #blindness #blind #visionimpaired #dolphins

Most people have heard that bats use echolocation to navigate and hunt in the dark, but have you ever watched it in action? 🔊🦇 #BatWeek Bats are talkative, social animals! They chatter and make grumpy noises between themselves in colonies, they chatter at rehabbers when we handle them (what we assume to mean "Stop that, I don't want to be manhandled!"), and they make even more sounds that aren't detectable to human ears! These ultrasonic calls are visually observable in some species when they call, though, as demonstrated by this fuzzy Hoary Bat! He is clearly opening his mouth to make sound, but we can't hear it. While bats have tiny eyes, they can fully explore what their surroundings look like in any lighting. Bats are the only mammals who have evolved full flight, and they're among the few who evolved echolocation, as well. We're so fortunate that we can appreciate such fantastic animals in our own back yards! 😍 #hoarybat #bats #wildlifeeducation #echolocation

Humans might not need eyes to “see.” In the comics, Daredevil uses radar-like perception to sense the world around him. But something similar already exists in real life. Some blind individuals use human echolocation... they make clicking sounds and interpret the echoes to map their surroundings. Even more fascinating, brain scans show their visual cortex activating, meaning the brain can repurpose vision centers to process sound. But biology hits a hard limit. Sound waves have large wavelengths. At around 1 kHz, the wavelength is roughly 34 cm, which means the spatial resolution is extremely low... worse than the size of a basketball. To detect small details like facial features, humans would need ultrasonic frequencies like bats or dolphins, and our biology simply isn’t built for that level of precision. And pushing it further gets even more dangerous. Imagine if humans had X-ray vision like Superman. X-rays are ionizing radiation. To “see” with them, your body would have to emit radiation, pass it through objects, and detect what scatters back. That means every glance would expose both you and everyone around you to harmful radiation—leading to DNA damage, mutations, and cancer. Sometimes evolution doesn’t choose the coolest ability. It chooses the one that keeps you alive. Echolocation is a biological process used by animals to locate objects and navigate their environment. By emitting high-pitched sounds and listening for the echoes produced, animals are able to determine the distance, direction, and size of objects around them. Many species of bats, whales, and dolphins use echolocation as their primary means of navigation and hunting. Bats emit sounds that bounce off objects and return as echoes, allowing them to locate and capture prey in complete darkness. Whales and dolphins use echolocation to communicate with one another, navigate their underwater environment, and locate food. Whales can adjust the frequency and intensity of its echolocation clicks to best suit the surrounding environment and optimize the information it receives from echoes #Echolocation #Bats #Whales #Dolphins #Navigation #Hunting #Communication #Underwater #whalewatching #whales # #marinebiology #whale #Sonar #Nature #wildlife #wildlifeencounter #sea #sealife #sea #babyanimal #clickers
