Most golfers chase a better swing. But a common limitation is often how well the body can separate and sequence movement. A key piece of that is upper and lower body dissociation—your ability to move the torso independently from the hips. An effective way to train this is through exercises like a unilateral cable row. When done correctly: • The lower body stays stable and grounded • The torso rotates and resists rotation under load • The core transfers force efficiently from the ground up This directly carries over to the golf swing. In an efficient swing, power is created through separation between the hips and shoulders (often called the X-factor). Research and TPI principles both support that greater separation—when controlled—can contribute to increased clubhead speed and improved energy transfer. Training this pattern: • Improves rotary power • Enhances thoracic mobility • Builds core stability in real-world movement patterns • Reduces compensation through the lower back It’s not just about getting stronger. It’s about teaching the body to move in the way the golf swing actually demands. Train the pattern → improve the swing.

Power training every golfer over 40 needs. One thing I see all the time with golfers over 40 is that they slowly stop training for power. They stretch more. They do mobility. Maybe some light strength work. But the ability to produce force quickly is usually the first thing to disappear with age. And that’s a problem, because power is one of the biggest drivers of club head speed. Here are two of my star clients @asciacca22 @kosciacca working through a split-grip rotational landmine clean to press. Why I like this drill: • It trains ground force → hip rotation → upper body transfer • The split grip creates torque and separation, similar to the golf swing • You have to accelerate the weight, then stabilize it overhead • It teaches the body to produce force and control it That sequence—load, rotate, transfer, finish—is essentially the same pattern we’re looking for in a powerful golf swing. The big takeaway: If you want to keep your speed (or even gain some) after 40, your training can’t just be mobility work and light weights. You need exercises that challenge your body to move explosively. Done right, drills like this build the kind of athletic power that actually carries over to the golf course.
