The question is not “How do I force myself to relax?” It’s “What part of me is running on fumes right now?” Before you reach for another productivity hack, pause. Look around. Let your nervous system orient. Get quiet for a second and ask: What feels most depleted? - Heavy, achy, trudging through mud? → Physical rest. - Everything too loud, too bright, too much? → Sensory rest. - Brain won’t shut up, stuck in rumination loops? → Mental rest. - Exhausted from managing everyone’s emotions? → Emotional rest. - Even people you love feel like too much? → Social rest. - Everything feels gray and flat? → Creative rest. - Disconnected from meaning or purpose? → Spiritual rest. You might need more than one. Most of us do. Start with the one that makes you exhale and say, “Oh. Yeah. That one.” Rest is not a moral issue. It’s a nervous system need. Your brain is not trying to tell you the truth. It’s trying to be efficient. It predicts. Constantly. Based on what you’ve lived, what you’ve felt, and what you keep rehearsing. So when fear shows up, when doubt feels real, when resistance takes over… pause. Because you’re not reacting to reality. You’re reacting to a simulation. And that simulation is trained. Most people try to change by fighting their thoughts. By “removing” what they don’t want. But that’s like pulling weeds… and planting nothing. Empty space doesn’t create change. Direction does. So instead… plant. New expectations. New anticipations. New rehearsals of who you are becoming. At first, it feels small. Unnatural. Inconsistent. But with repetition… it takes root. And eventually, it becomes what your brain recognizes as you. You don’t become what you want. You become what you practice.

You said this time would be different. You promised yourself you would protect your time. Hold the boundary. Stop overgiving. And yet… here you are. Working later than you planned. Saying “yes” when you mean, “Hell no!” Feeling resentment creeping in. Before you judge yourself, pause. This is not a step backward. In fact, it might be a new level. One of the biggest myths about boundaries is that once you learn them, you are done. But boundaries are not a one-time skill. They evolve as YOU evolve. When I left corporate and started my own business, I thought I had this mastered. Then I found myself overextending, proving, pushing. The old thoughts came back to me… “I need to prove myself.” “I do not want to let anyone down.” “I will just push through this one more time.” The truth was that growth was stretching me. (Ouch!) Sometimes when we rise, the systems that supported our last level no longer support this one. That does not mean you are bad at boundaries. It means you are being invited to deepen them.
