We have six small muscles around our eyes that help them move in various directions to take in spatial information from the world around us. Though tiny, these guys are mighty in terms of their effects on short and long term brain health. Challenging your muscles to move in new ways builds motor reserve, which could help modulate your brain’s capacity to tolerate pathological changes that occur with neurodegenerative diseases. Just like any other muscle in our body, our eye muscles have ranges of motion they prefer. Similar to the auto focus function on a camera, in order to stabilize our body, our eyes and brain must be in constant communication so that we can create a clear picture of our changing environment. Since we stabilize with our eyes, our body adjusts from the top down by reflexively toning around the spine in order to utilize its preferred ranges of motion. This impacts how well we load and unload our muscles. As we age, we start to lose range of motion in the vertical direction, specifically upward gaze. In diseases of the basal ganglia like #parkinsons disease, not only is upward gaze often severely impaired, so are saccadic movements (the rapid eye movements that allow the eyes to quickly jump to a new target.) We are now beginning to understand that our eye muscles send signals to the basal ganglia – the region of the brain that controls how we move and is affected by diseases like Parkinson’s disease. That means moving your eyes activates the brain cells in the basal ganglia and remember, your brain is a use it or lose it organ– it needs this activation to stay healthy or those brain cells will start to die. Not only does age have an impact on our eye muscle range of motion, but everyday activities of modern life further limit these movements: - Screen time - Reading -Time spent in indoor environments We can’t avoid these everyday activities, but we can train our eyes to combat the negative impact they may cause. 🚨🚨Check out part two for how to train this.
