The slide has become one of the most efficient volleyball attacks in college volleyball due to the parallel movement of the hitter, the ease for hitters to place the ball, and the speed of the play. To run a slide: - The hitter begins by facing the sideline instead of facing forward. In the old school way of the slide, the hitter would face forward then go around the setter to “hide” the slide. Now, hitters do not hide that they are running the slide because they are able to adjust so easier to the ball allowing them to hit around the block. - Next the hitter will start to chase or run to the ball. This is usually in the form of left-right-left, however, sometimes the hitter may take four steps. It is important for the hitter to stay behind the ball (farther from the net) to allow yourself to adjust and swing completely through on your hit. - The MOST IMPORTANT step is that the hitter must go off one foot to jump (similarity to a lay up in basketball). This what truly what makes a slide, a slide. For a right handed hitter, they will go off their left leg. Going off of one leg allows the hitter to adjust or float more in the air to go get the ball. It is important to jump up even if you are going to float to the ball. - The last step is for the hitter to pull back their right arm (righty hitter) as soon as they start to go off their left leg. This allows the hitter to generate power and hit faster tempo sets. The drawing of the arm is similar to a regular attack. The faster you can pull back the hitting arm back, the quicker you can adjust and hit the ball at different angles allowing you to place the ball where the defense is not. As always, land controlled. I did my best to exaggerate the wrist and hand movement! I see it a lot when athletes pass outside their midline and don’t have the platform mobility or ability to manipulate their platform well (coordination). They contact on their sweet spot but they turn their hands or wrists only. Or they are so used to tracking to the hands that they are inconsistent with their passes. As you go further outside the passing bubble, it gets harder to manipulate the platform. So you need the mobility and coordination to still be able to do it.
