Lock in your Arnold Presses! An Arnold Press done correctly is a rotational press — it’s not a rotation THEN a press. One smooth corkscrew up, with the rotation finishing at the top. That continuous motion is what creates dynamic engagement across multiple heads of the shoulder, especially through the front and top of the delts. And let’s be clear: When we say Arnold presses can be helpful for some types of shoulder impingement, we’re not suggesting they fix or structurally change the shoulder. In our experience, they’ve been a helpful tool for some people, when loaded properly. If traditional overhead presses are painful, these might be an option that works well using lighter loads and controlled motion because they allow dynamic engagement across the whole shoulder girdle. Shoulder impingement isn’t one thing, and tolerance varies person to person. ⚠️If it hurts, cut the weight or move on to a variation that doesn’t.⚠️ The goal isn’t to force a movement. The Arnold Press, named after @schwarzenegger has stood the test of time as a go-to press variation for building bigger shoulders. The issue is, some think that simply spinning the dumbbells as you press them is enough. It’s not that at all. It’s about the effect that turning the dumbbells has on your shoulder positioning and arm travel during the press. To effectively perform the exercise you want to let the elbows drift from in front of your body (where more work is being done by the front delts) to out at your sides (where more load is handled by the middle delts). If however you have shoulder joint pain or discomfort with overhead pressing, be careful not to go too wide. Instead go no further out than the “scapular plane” where your elbows are angled about 45 degrees from forward. Do Arnold proud and do the exercise….just make sure you do it right for best results and the most safety for your shoulders!
